Only 15% of India's Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) are performing effectively. (Bharti & Kumari, 2025). We are tackling the need for professional business strategy to turn smallholder agriculture into a profitable, empowering enterprise.

We launched a new partnership with Madhya Bharat Consortium of FPOs India (MBCFPCL), who work with three lakh farmers (40% women) across Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Our team, including business strategy and supply chain experts, conducted a two-day kick-off workshop in Bhopal with grassroots entrepreneurs and FPO leaders.

The sessions focused on co-creating livelihood opportunities by boosting profitability through aligning vision/mission/aspirations, systematic planning and quality management and its impact on marketability and pricing. To scale the business we covered key functions like supply chain, sales, HR, and financial management for wheat and mustard value chains required to scale the business.

Following up, we developed a detailed Year 1 action plan covering key areas such as HR, sales, financial management, certification, and supply chain strengthening.

These FPOs are willing to tackle complex value-chain challenges. Even during this a news crew unexpectedly arrived mid-session. The farmer leaders passionately shared their expert pro natural farming opinions.

By scaling B2B sales and value-added product processing, together we aim to double the number of jobs for women MBCFPCL will create.

Many successful social enterprises in India eventually hit a ceiling. And new capital won't lift it.

The paradox: the conviction and personal control that built your venture are the same qualities now impeding its growth. We call this the Founder Trap.

From our experience co-creating work and income for women in rural India, pushing through this barrier requires two operational shifts:

1. Rigorous self-knowledge. You must accurately identify your operational strengths and limits. Which decisions genuinely require you, and which ones have you simply never let go of?

2. Defining success structurally. You need to redefine success in terms of institutional resilience, not your personal presence or indispensable control.

The result is organizational strength, as seen in the case of our partner Rangsutra Crafts India, where founder Sumita Ghose redesigned her role to safeguard the mission while professionalizing core operations.

Are you leading your organization, or is your organization revolving around you?

In this article read our analysis and recommendations on how to transition from a model of personal heroism to institutional resilience: https://www.womenonwings.com/2026/05/founder-trap-india-social-enterprises/

When high-growth social enterprises look to scale, they seek partners with strategic alignment. AgroZee Organics Pvt. Ltd. (Millets Now) is ready to replicate its successful model, which is why they applied to the Women on Wings 2026 Call for Applications for food & agri social enterprises.

Founder and CEO Mahesh Londhe shared their motivation: “We view Women on Wings as the ideal platform for this growth, given WoW's strong alignment with our mission to foster women-led, nutrition-focused, and climate-resilient millet food systems.”

This partnership will speed up Agrozee Organics' strategic expansion. This involves engaging women throughout the entire value chain, from processing to distribution. All to ensure that their mission to strengthen rural economies and further empower women entrepreneurs reaches its full potential.

Agrozee is a proven model with scalable impact. Their work already strengthens the millet value chain to combat iron deficiency anemia for over 3.5 lakh school children.

Meet Sakhi Unique Resource Enterprise Pvt Ltd (SURE), one of the finalists of our 2026 Call for Applications. SURE is primarily focused on creating a last-mile distribution network for climate-resilient products and services, like solar lighting and sustainable agriculture inputs, in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, India.

The organization aims to drive rural economic empowerment and climate-smart livelihoods by an entrepreneurship-led approach with local women leaders, known as "Sakhis," who act as micro-entrepreneurs.

SURE's journey to becoming a finalist involved a rigorous screening for strategic fit, followed by an invitation to submit a pitch and present it to a jury. Their final selection was based on their strong business model, founder clarity, job creation potential, and alignment with our advisory approach.

Our collaborations are underway including a recent onsite business strategy assignment.

Sanju, a bright mother of four with a BA, once focused solely on domestic life. Now, she runs a thriving shop and serves as a vital Agri Entrepreneur (AE) in her village. This shift unleashed her talent.

She sells essential, high-quality farm inputs and provides critical technical advice to fellow female farmers. Her role is structured within our partner Udhyami Mahila Farmer Producer Company (FPC).

Diversification has been what’s done it for her. Farm income is seasonal, so Sanju also operates a grocery and FMCG shop. This smart move doubled her income, creating a reliable financial buffer.

Agri-Entrepreneur roles like Sanju’s solves the smallholder trap by boosting farm yields and driving local stability. Non-financial, long-term expert support (like Women on Wings provides) in strategy and supply chain guarantees the FPC model scales efficiently.

We collaborate and build with sustainable organizations like Udhyami Mahila.

Was this a scam?
Would the money we contribute simply vanish?

For some women in rural India, starting a new livelihood is overcoming the fear of joining the unknown. One woman shared with us that when a Self-Help Group (SHGs) began in her village those questions arose.

This initial skepticism is common. Women fear losing their meager savings.
But the breakthrough was the courage of a few pioneers in her village.

Women who were slightly more financially stable took the first leap, investing small amounts to lead by example. Their courage was the "confidence factor" for the entire community.

As the months passed, fear gave way to fact: funds were held in transparent, collective bank accounts.

When an emergency hit, the money was actually there.
This reliability turned the skepticism into a sense of security.

Today, these SHGSs across rural India are a foundation for economic empowerment. SHGs provide a safe savings space, secure livelihoods and are a way women launch micro-enterprises.

This International Women's Day, we celebrate these systems of trust.
Built by women.
For women.
That drives economic progress, equality, community and stability in rural India.

Through SHGs these strong women improved and furthered their incomes. Learn their stories:

For many, Holi is about spring, new beginnings and joyfully throwing colors at each other. And for our Social Enterprise Director, Supriya Kapoor, partnering with organizations economically empowering women in rural India sees something deeper in the vibrant hues: courage.

"I’ve always loved color... But over the years, I’ve begun to see color as courage. Many of these women have little, perhaps facing real hardship, yet they choose to dress in the brightest colors every single day. Choosing color, even when life is not easy, is a quiet refusal to let circumstance define their spirit. The quiet strength of these women feels like Holi lived year-round."

This Holi, we celebrate the festival of colors, and the vibrant strength of these women. Their spirit is the truest color of Holi.

Tag a woman whose strength shines as brightly as her spirit! Happy Holi!

A peek into a business strategy assignment with Bhuvikash Krish-E FPC (BKFPCL), a women-led FPO in Odisha, alongside our partner Dvara E-Registry.

During our onsite workshops the BKFPCL women board of directors showed incredible openness, sharing their drive to "grow new crops, make value-added products and work harder if we get a market to sell."

BKFPCL aims to turn into a large-scale agri-enterprise focused on high-quality seeds, crops and high-margin value-added products. So, to co-create a business strategy for dignified livelihoods, Dvara E-Registry, the FPO board and our team of business strategy expert Arpita Pal Agrawal and Chanakya Mehta, worked online and then onsite to:

- Define BKFPCL's Why, How and What
- Conduct a deep-dive SWOT analysis
- Explore new revenue models
- Shrewdly identify expansion roadblocks

What their new strategy looks like>>>>
>> a focus on market-led crop planning, connecting with new B2B buyers identified during our assignment
>> adding product streams to increase revenue and impact
>> digital-first governance: a move from paper-based / manual processes for efficiency + transparency

And their aggressive three-year goals: scale to over 3,000 women shareholders and achieve a 3x annual turnover. Next steps include finalizing B2B buyer connection timelines and new value chains costing.
