SHOWING GRATITUDE FOR THE PRIVILEGE TO TRAVEL: How to calculate, reduce and compensate for your personal carbon footprint?

Holiday season in on. The tourist industry grows like never before. And many of us debate between discovering far away lands and avoiding the enlargement of our Carbon Foot Print.

A roundtrip, Economy Class from Amsterdam to Tokio will produce an appalling 3.5 tons of CO2 for one single person.

Can you choose to actively protect the climate?

Myclimate, org provides the option to offset unavoidable emissions by means of climate protection measures elsewhere.Because – in contrast to air pollution – it generally makes no difference to the climate where on the surface of the earth the unwanted gases get into the atmosphere and where they are reduced. The important thing is for greenhouse gas emissions to be reduced overall worldwide. Therefore, it makes sense for emissions that get into the air at one location to be saved at another.

Using the offsetting mechanism, Myclimate.org finances the additional costs that are, for example, incurred through the use of renewable energy sources compared to the use of fossil fuels. This price depends on the project size, the technology used and the country in which the project is carried out. Focusing on developing and emerging countries, the donations are used to replace climate-damaging fossil energy sources with renewable energies or implement energy efficiency measures. This makes it possible to compensate the same amount of climate-impacting emissions. Therefore, offsetting means that
effectively no harmful greenhouse gases are released.

High-quality climate protection projects – What projects does Myclimate.org support?

Myclimate.org supports projects the use renewable energies, realise energy efficiency measures and cut methane emissions, as well as reforestation and new forest initiatives that reduce the pressure on forests and biodiversity «hot spots». Climate protection projects result in lower CO2 emissions whilst contributing significantly to sustainable development in the region.

Only projects that meet the globally recognised, highest standards can successfully help protect the climate. So myclimate draws on the strictest, most independent quality standards (CDM, Gold Standard and Plan Vivo) when selecting and structuring its own climate protection projects. The foundation works closely with experienced and independent partners in the respective countries to implement climate protection projects. These local partners make sure that local projects are realised professionally, and they also regularly review the projects’ impact. In addition, climate protection projects undergo an annual review by another independent, external body.

Calculate, reduce and compensate for your personal carbon footprint.

Your donation for this trip can provide an efficient cook stove for five women in Kenya; build a biogas plant to a family in India; or pay for the reforestation of a piece of 1 square km of forest in Nicaragua.

Privilege of Travel was present at the World Travel Market 2017, which took place in London earlier this week. We participated in a series of conferences and events, related to responsible travelling, equality of opportunities in the travel industry, social and cultural integration and women initiatives, such as the 'Responsible Tourism Networking Fringe' and the 'Woman in Travel' met up. It is very encouraging to see that so many players on this massive industry have a genuine interest in these important matters and that this supports the work of companies like Privilege of Travel. In deed, together we make a better world.

What is Luxury? Luxury has a long history of controversy. More recently, the increase in prominence and growth of luxury brands against the backdrop of social inequality has raised new questions about what the term means to people today. Changes in culture and communication have also stimulated interest in less tangible forms of luxury, such as the desire for space and time.

The question of luxury is ultimately a personal one. Everyone decides for themselves what their luxury could be. Enjoying or affording luxury is not only a question of budget but of individual circumstances and preferences. At Privilege of Travel we consider that travelling itself constitute a luxury and not the commodity it has become. We strive to bring this concept to Hotels and Travellers in order to make the appreciate what is really important in life.
