At Bush Brothers 🪴

Together with buyer Nick, we visited Bush Brothers in De Lier, where twin brothers Marco and Patrick represent the second generation of growers. Many in the trade will still know them as Landsbergen Orchids.

Their fascination with unusual plants is clear to see. Not everything is grown for volume; certain lines are deliberately kept exclusive and produced in smaller numbers.

Marco: “It’s often the more exclusive varieties that attract the true enthusiasts.” ✨

Walking through the nursery, it’s hard not to be impressed by the patience involved. Some orchids take up to four years before they are ready for sale, requiring years of planning, care and specialist knowledge before they ever reach the customer.

The search for something new is never really finished here. There is always another plant, variety or idea being explored, keeping the assortment fresh and evolving.

Much of the Bush Brothers assortment is available through our webshop.

We know importing orchids into the UK can sometimes be a challenge. If you need support, our customs team is happy to think along with you. Just get in touch with your usual contact. 🧡

Together with buyer Arjan, we visited Moerman Lilium during today’s open day. 🌸

55 years of family growing experience, and today one of the largest Roselily growers in the Netherlands, with innovation and quality at the centre of everything they do.

Walking through the greenhouse, one thing immediately catches the eye: the cabrio greenhouse system, where the roof can fully open to maximise sunlight. Particularly important for Roselily, helping create strong plants and excellent flower quality.

Growing in crates allows fresh soil every cycle and gives the roots more space to develop, helping create stronger plants and faster production. Combined with pre-growing and cooling techniques, this creates a head start of up to two or three weeks each round. ⏱️

Roselily remains a distinctive product in the market. Always pollen-free and without stamens, making it ideal for weddings and events, while still carrying a subtle fragrance.

Arjan: “What stands out is the flexibility. Special requests, weddings, last-minute demand, the answer is rarely no. Strong communication and years of working together make all the difference.” 🤝🏻

Available throughout much of the season, with several new developments expected over the coming years. One promising dark purple variety is currently entering growing trials, although it may still take several years before reaching the market.

At Feiko Sonneveld 💐

A grower with real passion for celosia, a product that’s anything but straightforward to grow.

Specialised in celosia for over 27 years, they’ve built a reputation around consistency and quality. Walking through the greenhouse, the colours immediately catch the eye.

Feiko: “Celosia never behaves exactly the same. Every stem has its own shape and character. The velvet texture and unusual shape make it such a distinctive product.”

One thing he is particularly focused on is biological crop protection, using beneficial insects to naturally control pests throughout the greenhouse. 🐞

But above all, it’s Feiko’s enthusiasm for the product that stands out. The kind of enthusiasm that’s hard not to get caught up in once he starts talking about celosia.

One of the varieties he’s especially proud of is the orange variety, first discovered here back in 2009 as a single orange branch.

Available from April through to December, the celosia season is now getting into full swing. Our buyer Robert Jan is happy to help with any questions about the range. 🤝🏻🧡

Out with Bas at A.J. Voskamp ✨

We visited this nigella grower together with our buyer Bas, where things are still done the traditional way, working closely with nature. From seed to finished product, everything is handled in-house. Arend Jan has been breeding nigella for over 25 years. Real handwork, with each stem checked by hand and even the bunching still done manually.

Nigella, often known as Love-in-a-Mist, is grown here in a variety of colours, each with its own character. Widely used in field-style bouquets and more natural arrangements, it works across different styles. 👌🏻

The season has just started, and as always, Arend Jan is one of the first to bring nigella to market. He is a real perfectionist, spending long days in the field to get it right.

Buyer Bas: “There are 12 colours here. You’ll know the classics, but as you can see, there’s more. It’s the niche varieties that really stand out.” Want to know which ones? Get in touch with Bas to explore all the possibilities. 🧡

We’re out with plant buyer Dirk at Kwekerij Grootscholten🪴

Together with John, second generation, we walked through the nursery and saw first-hand how their seasonal range is grown. From summer bedding plants to cyclamen, Grootscholten focuses on distinctive seasonal products, with a wide choice of colours and varieties.

With around 9.5 hectares, three greenhouses and sections that can open up, they are able to grow the plants on in natural outdoor conditions. This helps produce strong plants, ready for the season ahead.

Their range changes throughout the year, with around 50 to 60 varieties during peak season. With the season now getting underway, the range is building up quickly.

We’ve been working together for around 10 years. What started more through the auction clock has developed into working directly, with a good understanding on both sides of what is needed day to day.

Dirk: “A grower we know well and can rely on. The way we work together is very straightforward, and the quality is consistently high. That makes it a very reliable partnership.” 🤝🏻🧡

Join our Lisianthus buyer Wim on today’s grower visit 🌸

Just a few minutes from us you’ll find Lugt Lisianthus, a name associated with quality for over 100 years. What started in 1920 as a small outdoor vegetable nursery in Honselersdijk has grown into one of the best known Lisianthus growers in the Netherlands. The company remains family owned and is run by a small and dedicated team.

Their modern site in Monster was purpose built for Lisianthus. Wider spans, fresh outside air mixed into the greenhouse climate and the sandy coastal soil help create ideal conditions for strong, high quality stems.

Our contact there is Sven Halman, who some of you might recognise. He used to work with us before moving to the grower side, so it is safe to say he knows exactly what we are looking for.

Wim: “Lisianthus remains a florist favourite thanks to its elegant blooms, multiple buds per stem and strong vase life.”
