Behind the assortment 💐

A different kind of visit for Robin today, visiting the Marginpar team and taking a closer look at the story behind an assortment we know well.

While many of the growers we work with are just around the corner, Marginpar’s flowers come from much further afield. More than 100 varieties are grown across several farms in Africa, creating a broad and distinctive range with a strong focus on quality, new varieties and continually improving existing products.

That variety stretches across several product categories within our buying team. Each of our buyers has their own specialisms, which means several of them select Marginpar flowers as part of our daily assortment.

Much of Marginpar’s product is traded through the auction. But good buying has never been just about what appears on the screen. Our close contact with Marginpar’s sales team means we keep talking product, follow new developments and exchange what we’re both seeing in the market.

Robin: “It’s a really strong range. There’s always something new coming through, while they keep improving the products we already know.”

It all starts thousands of miles away on farms in Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. From there, the flowers travel to Aalsmeer, where the varieties we select become part of our assortment before continuing their journey to customers across Europe and the UK.

The link between origin and destination. That’s where we come in. 🧡🤝🏻

Out with Anne, this time at Holstein Flowers. 🌸

Paul and Bas van Holstein showed us around the greenhouse and took us through the latest developments in their assortment.

What began in 1974 as one of the first gerbera nurseries has grown into a third-generation family business. For more than fifty years, Holstein has also been breeding its own varieties. Of the more than 200 varieties tested each year, only the strongest eventually make it into production.

There was plenty new to see during our visit. As part of the current crop rotation, twelve new varieties are being introduced, ranging from new colours within familiar series to completely new gerberas. Paul and Bas expect the first stems to be ready for harvest in around four to six weeks. 👌🏻

Across more than 10 hectares, spread over two locations, Holstein harvests around a thousand stems per variety every day. More than 90% of the assortment consists of their own varieties, giving them a range that is both distinctive and reliably available.

Anne: “Holstein stands out because of its special varieties. Not just the fourth shade of pink, but gerberas that really add something. That’s what makes them a great supplier for us.”

The current Holstein Flowers assortment is available through our online shop. If you are looking for something specific, please contact your usual Duyvenvoorde contact. 🧡

Out with Wim, this time at ANSU. 🌸

Today, we joined our cut flower buyer Wim on a visit to ANSU in Wateringen, where Robbie showed us around the nursery and introduced us to the work behind these remarkable orchids.

Founded by Steef more than twenty years ago, ANSU has grown from a small collection of plants into a Vanda specialist supplying customers around the world. Breeding and propagation take place in Thailand, before the plants come to the Netherlands for further growing, finishing and sales.

It soon became clear just how much time and patience go into every Vanda. Developing a new variety can take up to fifteen years, while developing a white Vanda required twenty-five years of breeding.

Today, ANSU offers more than one hundred Vanda varieties in an impressive range of colours and patterns, available as both cut flowers and plants.

Vandas are often cut to order and harvested only once every flower is fully open. This allows each order to be tailored to the customer’s requirements, from variety and colour to stem length and stage of maturity.

Wim: “Vanda is one of those flowers that immediately catches your eye, so every detail has to be right. Seeing how much time, knowledge and care go into each variety gives you an even greater appreciation for the product.”

This time we came for the cut flowers. We’ll be back to take a closer look at the plants. 🧡

With wedding season in full swing, we recently visited Meijer Roses in Pijnacker.

Together with Bart, our rose buyer, we were welcomed by Wesley and Jeffrey Meijer, the third generation of the family business. Having worked together for well over ten years, it’s always good to spend time with one of our long-standing growers. 🤝🏻

For more than fifty years, the Meijer family has been dedicated to growing premium roses. Today, they continues that legacy, specialising in a carefully selected range of varieties and letting quality speak for itself.

Across two nursery sites, Meijer Roses specialises in Avalanche+, Sweet Avalanche+, Pearl Avalanche+, Four Seasons and Dorchester.

What stood out most during our visit was the calmness of the nursery. There’s no sense of rushing the process. Every decision is made with patience, allowing each rose the time it needs to reach its full potential.

The buds may look modest when they leave the nursery, but that’s exactly as they should be. Once in the vase, they gradually develop into the large, elegant blooms they’re renowned for. It’s one of the reasons they’re such a favourite with florists during wedding season.

Bart: “You can tell when quality comes first. It’s in the way the crop is managed, the attention to detail and the patience to let every rose develop at its own pace.”

Looking for premium roses this wedding season? The full Meijer Roses assortment is available through our webshop throughout the season. 🧡

Another week, another grower. 🪴🫶🏻

Back on the road with Nick, our plant buyer. This time, we visited Ovata, one of the growers we’ve come to know well over the years.

Marco welcomed us and showed us around, sharing more about the company, its vision and the continuous drive to keep improving. Along the way, we also met Rob from the growing team, Ovata’s longest-serving colleague. A great reminder that while technology continues to evolve, experience remains just as valuable.

Succulents are at the heart of what Ovata does. Since 2005, the company has invested heavily in its own breeding programme, and today around 80% of the assortment consists of varieties developed in-house. The result is a range of strong, healthy plants that perform consistently throughout the supply chain. 👌🏻

One thing we found particularly interesting was Ovata’s closed water system. Every drop of rainwater is collected, reused and recirculated, so nothing goes to waste.

And yes… we all gave the nutrient water a try. Marco convinced us, and we have to admit, it was actually pretty good.

Nick: “Every grower has their own way of doing things, and that’s what makes visits like these so worthwhile. You always come away with new ideas, a better understanding of the product, and something valuable to share with our customers.”

That’s exactly why we enjoy sharing these visits. Every grower has their own story, and we’re always grateful for the opportunity to learn more about the people behind it.

Much of the Ovata assortment is available through our webshop. If you’d like to know more, just get in touch with your usual contact. 🧡

A few moments behind the scenes. 🎥🧡

Last week, we had the privilege of visiting several of our long-standing grower partners before welcoming many of them to Duyvenvoorde for a very special project with Simon Lycett and his team.

Over the course of several days, we captured the journey of flowers from the greenhouses to Duyvenvoorde, where every part of the story came together.

Much of what makes this trade so special happens behind the scenes. Through this project, we had the opportunity to celebrate every link in the chain, from the grower, through the wholesaler, to the florist. Different expertise, shared passion. It’s through trust, craftsmanship and collaboration that something truly special can be created. ✨

We hope everyone who plays their part in this trade will recognise a little of themselves in the film.

A sincere thank you to every grower who opened their doors to us, to Simon Lycett and his fantastic team, and to everyone who helped make this project possible.

We look forward to sharing it with you soon. 🫶🏻

At Van Aert Flowers 🚜🌸

This week, we made the trip to Breda to visit Van Aert Flowers, a grower we have been working with since 1990. Safe to say, it was well worth the journey.

Today, fourth-generation grower Corné van Aert runs the family business together with his wife Annemiek. Walking through the fields, it quickly becomes clear that this is a business built on experience, patience and a constant drive to improve.

Astilbe is at the heart of the nursery, accounting for around 70% of production. Behind every stem sits a surprisingly long process, with plants propagated in-house and grown over a two-year cycle before reaching full production.

Corné: “We’re always looking at what can be improved. New varieties, better vase life, different colours. You have to keep moving forward.” 👏🏻

That drive to keep improving is one of the reasons we’ve enjoyed working together for more than 35 years.

At Van Aert, innovation starts in the field. New Astilbe varieties are on the horizon, with customers invited to visit in September to see the latest developments in bloom for themselves.

From wedding work to natural, field-inspired bouquets, Astilbe adds texture, movement and a soft, natural look to a wide range of floral designs. 💐
