🌷 Behind the scenes at Onings: the ethylene meter in action.

We're in the middle of tulip processing season, with our cold stores running at full capacity. To keep a close eye on bulb quality, we use our new ethylene meter every day. In this video, our colleague Niels shows how it works: he wheels the mobile measuring unit into the storage cell and starts the reading.

What does it do? It continuously measures the concentration of ethylene gas in the cell. This gas is released by diseased or 'sour' bulbs and can damage healthy bulbs even at very low concentrations (from just 100 ppb), causing flower bud blasting or excessive splitting. As soon as the meter picks up a rise, we increase ventilation to stop further ethylene build-up.

This way we keep a close watch on the harvest and can act immediately if 'sour disease' breaks out. What gets measured, gets managed
— and it helps us prevent damage, for the best possible quality of our tulip bulbs.

The 2026 lily trial results are now live! 🌐

The results of the trials that were displayed during the Dutch Lily Days can be found in our lily database: https://onings.com/?s=&genus=lelie. By clicking on one of the varieties, the new test results are on the right side of the page (if tested in 2026).

Dutch Lily Days are built around rigorous quality checks. Each trial uses a 30-bulb sample representing a lot received last winter after harvest. Samples are evaluated on metrics like bud count, stem length, forcing time, and disease presence. The average results per variety can now be checked on your computer or mobile phone. 💻️ 📱

Working with lilies is both challenging and rewarding! 💐

Every year we invite the students from Flower Styling & Events MBO Westland to design arrangements for the Dutch Lily Day with lilies from our test greenhouse.

Lilies can be delicate in bloom, and working with fresh stems means picturing the finished piece before it fully opens. Still, they bring arrangements to life and naturally become the showstoppers. That’s why it’s so valuable for our students to get hands-on time with them. 👩‍🏭

Meanwhile in New Zealand... 🇳🇿

The harvest of the lily bulbs is taking serious proportions. After we started harvesting small size bulbs, we have now also harvested the first commercial sizes.

The crop is looking really well. We have experienced very little difficulties during the growing season. The quality is expected to be really good 🥇
