Our favourite season is officially here: hot cross buns season.

We might be the first in Auckland. Early? Maybe. Prepared? Absolutely 😉

A (slightly) belated Birthday our one and only Dusty!

Meet Dusty, our professional Work Life Balance Assistant.

He joins every job interview (just to make sure candidates have the right energy), keeps us company when deadlines pile up, and gently reminds us of when it’s time to head home.

Every morning begins the same way - Dusty making sure Fred doesn’t forget his coffee☕️
Because in the BBR office, balance starts with caffeine… and a little help from our Dusty!

We’re buzzing over here because our client, .io, is now in the pre-alpha stage of its automated time-tracking product designed for creative professionals.

But let’s talk about what we’ve been up to behind the scenes to elevate Shutterspeed’s profile in the competitive startup landscape. Our team has been working hard to put Shutterspeed on the map, focusing on maximising its media presence to ensure it’s not just another startup in the crowd.

Check out this informative article by Ben Moore, featuring co-founder Freddie Mckenzie. Techstars is the world’s most active pre-seed investor and has an acceptance rate of just 1%, so he and co-founder Henry Collinson never thought they’d make the cut: https://businessdesk.co.nz/article/technology/startup-shutterspeed-makes-creativity-more-profitable

Allan and Fred recently presented an insightful crash course on the power of PR at the Connector Communities event. They explained how PR can empower businesses at every stage – from startup to established enterprise, there’s always a role for communications.

Effective PR cuts through the noise through impactful engagement with customers, clients, suppliers, investors and media. Our team specialises in helping fast-growth companies sharpen their strategic communications to stand out in a crowded market.

If you’re interested in refining your PR approach, drop us a line – we’d be happy to tailor a strategy just for you.

How are you integrating te reo Māori into your communication approach?

Respectful use of te reo Māori doesn’t require perfect fluency but demonstrates a commitment to cultural respect and understanding. Practices such as learning a kaikōhau or mihi, starting a kōrero with Māori phrases, taking your time to learn the lyrics of popular waiata, and reading more on tikanga Māori can go a long way in our interactions.

Embracing te reo Māori also supports whakawhanaungatanga, the Māori concept of building trust and genuine connections. By allowing space for people to express what’s in their hearts, we foster a deeper sense of respect and empathy in our communications and workplace interactions.

As the whakataukī says – ko te reo te taikura o te whakaaro marama, language is the key to understanding – using te reo Māori honours its role as a vibrant, living language. It helps build lasting and positive connections with diverse audiences. He waka eke noa, we’re all in this together, working towards a more inclusive and culturally aware communication landscape.

This year’s Construction Industry Survey, a collaborative effort between Teletrac Navman and Civil Contractors New Zealand, marks a milestone for us at BBR. We’ve worked on this annual survey for eight years, constantly evolving the questionnaire and resulting report. This year we’ve produced an interactive dashboard that breaks down data by region and business size.

The results are a wake-up call: 64 percent of businesses report a severe lack of work, highlighting the pressures facing an industry that is essential to maintaining New Zealand’s infrastructure.

Findings from this year’s survey were cited by Chris Hipkins, Leader of the Opposition, in his speech at the Local Government New Zealand Conference in Wellington. The report has also been referenced by leading economists and business publications.

For us at BBR, this survey is more than just data collection. It’s about keeping a close eye on the civil construction industry, making sure the voice of an industry that forms the backbone of the country is heard loud and clear by local and central government. We’re proud of our role in this project to support an industry that does such critical work for New Zealand.

The secret to starting Friday just right and boosting energy levels in winter? It’s all about sharing, according to Fred! His famous banana cake with a healthy twist of honey is fresh out of the oven, making this Friday extra flavourful. We can smell a BBR Bake Off in the air! 😉
