On Waitangi Day, New Zealand's national day, we remember the long history of New Zealand-Aotearoa's unique mānuka tree. Even before honey bees became established in New Zealand the mānuka tree was established with the indigenous Māori people as an essential resource for health treatments. Many of the health benefits we see from manuka honey today were present in the bark, leaves and nectar of the manuka tree from the outset.

The mānuka tree was used in traditional remedies for, wound healing, gut health, pain relief, treating coughs colds and fevers, mouthwashes and oral health care and more. Many of the same applications we see in modern manuka honey products.
