🚂 1940 NZR Engine Driver Uniforms – Built for the Footplate, Made to Order by Rails Aotearoa 🇳🇿
For years, steam crews across the motu have had to make do with ill-fitting modern overalls, synthetic blends that don't belong near a firebox, or fragile vintage gear that is too worn out for a hard day's steaming.

Rails Aotearoa is sorting that out for good. We are bringing back the classic 1940 New Zealand Railways (NZR) engine driver and fireman uniform, recreated directly from original NZR patterns and proudly 100% handmade right here in New Zealand 🪡✨.

Whether you are firing on a steep grade 🔥, oiling around before departure 🔧, or representing your heritage line on a public excursion 🎫, this kit is built to do the mahi and look the part.

Why this kit belongs on the footplate:
* 🔥 100% Natural, Footplate-Safe Fabrics: Zero synthetics. Constructed entirely from heavy-duty natural fibres that breathe beside an open firebox and protect crews from heat, sparks, and cinders without melting.

* 📐 True 1940s NZR Cut: Cut from original railway patterns for proper movement on the shovel and levers, featuring practical pocket layouts built for working crews.

* 🇳🇿 100% NZ Craftsmanship: Every garment is tailored to order for a proper fit by Sabe by Vinnie, authentic peaked caps are crafted by Hills Hats, and the ties are handmade by Parisian.

* 🧥 Full Kits or Individual Pieces: Grab the full turnout—jacket, bib overalls, long-sleeve black shirt, heavy wool winter overcoat, peaked cap, and tie—or order individual items to upgrade your current gear.

* 📏 Easy Sizing Nationwide: Based outside of Auckland? No problem at all. We provide a straightforward measurement guide so you can easily send your sizing through from anywhere in the country—or you can book an in-person fitting in Auckland.

📅 Rollout & Ordering:
* 📋 Price List: Available within the next two weeks (both individual and heritage society/group enquiries welcome).

* ⚙️ Production Starts: January 2027.
📧 If you are keen on the full kit or individual pieces for the upcoming steaming seasons, flick us an email at [email protected] to register your interest and get on the first mailing list for the price guide and measurement sheet.

Ever wondered who actually made the classic New Zealand Railways badges? The answer might surprise you! 🚂🇳🇿

As showcased in this heritage collection poster the intricate N.Z.R. Monogram and N.Z. Railways Insignia, alongside specific frontline role badges: Guard, Porter, Signalman, Shunter, and Storeman.

These gleaming nickel badges were a massive point of pride—especially for the Guards wearing them on their peaked uniform caps on the job.
While the designs were strictly homegrown—stylized and strictly controlled by the New Zealand Railways Publicity Department to maintain brand integrity—the physical manufacturing happened across the Tasman.

At the time, New Zealand simply lacked the specialized die-making and die-striking capabilities required to produce them to the necessary standard. Because of this, these iconic pieces of local history were actually manufactured by Stokes and Sons in Melbourne, Australia.

If they look familiar to our international friends, there's a reason! The NZR uniform guidelines drew heavy inspiration from British Railways and military specifications. Thanks to this influence, you can spot very similar badge styles across Australia and other former British colonies.

There were later trials to stamp and manufacture these badges locally here in Aotearoa. However, the quality of those domestic batches unfortunately fell below the high standard set by the Australian-made originals, making the Stokes and Sons pieces the definitive standard.

Here at Rails Aotearoa, we are dedicated to uncovering and preserving the craftsmanship and stories behind our railway uniform history.

Do you have any of these classic badges in your collection? Let us know in the comments! 👇

A quick reminder from the team at Rails Aotearoa 🚂

Anyone who chooses to troll this page—especially those who send snarky inbox messages complaining about Aotearoa being in our business name—will be banned straight away.

No warnings, no debates—just an instant ticket off the platform. There are already well over 100 people sitting on the naughty list, and we have plenty of room for more.

This page is here to celebrate our railway history, heritage, stories, and uniforms. If you want "Rail New Zealand" so badly, go and ask the government to bring it back. Otherwise, keep the small-minded comments to yourself.

On a brighter note, here is our new mascot Rere (standing proudly in front of Ka 945) waving goodbye to the trolls and hello to our genuine rail whānau!

Rere will be featuring in our new children's book coming out later in the year. What do you reckon of his engine drivers uniform? 📖🚂

The classic photo stop. There is nothing quite like stepping down from the carriages to watch the historic steam locomotive Ab 608 "Passchendaele" in all her glory. It is a perfect moment for everyone to line the tracks, set up their cameras, and capture a living piece of Aotearoa's railway history.
A massive thank you to all the volunteer engine drivers, firemen, and guards who made the day possible.
Mauri ora!

E ngā mana, e ngā reo, e rau rangatira mā, tēnā koutou katoa.

Today at Glenbrook Station, it was a profound privilege to be on the roster for a special charter by the Passchendaele Society, featuring the historic steam locomotive Ab 608, appropriately named "Passchendaele."

More than just a magnificent piece of our railway heritage, Ab 608 is a living, moving war memorial. Commissioned in 1925 by Minister Gordon Coates to honour the more than 5,000 New Zealand Railways personnel who served in the First World War—including 444 who made the ultimate sacrifice—she stands as a tribute to those who served and fell overseas.

Members of the society gathered to lay wreaths upon her running board, paying tribute to the railwaymen who answered the call.

This followed the Society’s annual commemoration held on Sunday, 11 October, marking the 109th anniversary of the attack on Bellevue Spur at Passchendaele.

The event brought together many distinguished guests, including the Society's patron, Sir Wayne Shelford, who read the ode in te reo Māori, and Major General Warren Whiting, who delivered the address.

Gratitude was also extended to representatives from the consular services of Belgium, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Poland, alongside members of the Emergency Services, the New Zealand Defence Forces, and Parliament, as well as the society's members and supporters.

Built in 1915 at Addington Workshops, Ab 608 was dedicated to the memory of those who lost their lives in the tragic battle.

Seeing her in full steam today in the care of Steam Incorporated, pulling heritage carriages through the countryside at the outstanding Glenbrook Vintage Railway, brings that history vividly to life.

It allows us to not only appreciate a marvelous piece of technology integral to the war effort, but to reflect on the human stories behind it and the machines that carried our men toward the battlefields of Flanders.

Ka maumahara tonu tātou ki a rātou.
We will remember them.

Nāku iti nei,

Kawe Roes

Step back in time with this clip of Ab 608 coupling up to her train at Pūtāruru, getting ready for the return run to Tokoroa last weekend 🚂💨

It’s all about the traditional skills here. Watch as Jack gives the hand signals to guide the engine driver in, bringing the buffers together perfectly.

From there, it's a textbook hook-up: dropping the kidney link in place, pushing in the pin, connecting the air hoses, and linking up the side chains before carrying out the essential brake test.

There is nothing quite like watching the old-school N.Z.R operational procedures in action. Who else loves seeing these heritage rail skills kept alive?
