The Do’s and Don’ts of Using Māori Culture in the Recruitment and Interview Process

Tuesday 24 June | 1:00pm – 2:00pm

🤝Join Maurea for an insightful and practical webinar exploring how organisations can create recruitment and interview experiences that are culturally safe, authentic and welcoming for Māori candidates.

👥Recruitment is often the first meaningful interaction a person has with an organisation. The way we design our processes, engage with candidates and incorporate Māori culture can have a lasting impact. But what does meaningful cultural inclusion look like, and what are the common pitfalls organisations should avoid?

🤩In this honest and practical conversation, we bring together two highly respected leaders who offer perspectives from both the recruitment and Māori governance and leadership worlds.

⭐️Amy Tea (Pākehā), Director of Amy Tea Consulting, is a leading executive search specialist with extensive experience recruiting at Board, CEO and Senior Executive level. Having worked across both Tangata Tiriti and kaupapa Māori organisations throughout Aotearoa, Amy brings valuable insights into how recruitment practices can better recognise and engage Māori talent.

⭐️Gina Rangi (Te Arawa – Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāti Whakaue, Ngāti Tahu-Whaoa, Raukawa and Maniapoto) is Chair of Tūaropaki Trust, the largest Māori land trust in Aotearoa. With a background in law, Tiriti negotiations and executive leadership across iwi and government, Gina brings a powerful perspective on cultural integrity, tikanga and the Māori experience within organisational systems.

Together, Amy and Gina will discuss:

🙏 How organisations can create culturally safe and welcoming recruitment experiences.
🙏 Practical ways to incorporate tikanga Māori appropriately into interview processes.
🙏 Common cultural mistakes organisations make when engaging with Māori candidates and how to avoid them.
🙏 Whether traditional recruitment approaches unintentionally disadvantage Māori applicants.
🙏 What organisations should avoid asking, assuming or doing during recruitment.
🙏 How HR and people leaders can respond appropriately when they make cultural mistakes.
🙏 Practical “quick wins” that organisations can implement immediately.
🙏 What Māori candidates can expect, how to engage with tikanga elements in interviews, and what to do – and not do – as an interviewee.

Whether you work in HR, people and culture, leadership, or are involved in hiring decisions, this webinar will provide practical guidance to help you approach Māori culture in recruitment with greater confidence, respect and authenticity.

Join us as we explore the do’s, the don’ts, and the small changes that can make a meaningful difference.

What a fantastic evening celebrating local business at the Ōrākei Local Board Business Awards 2026.

While Maurea wasn’t fortunate enough to take home an award this year, (fingers crossed for next year Alumni!) we thoroughly enjoyed being surrounded by so many passionate and inspiring local business owners, all coming together to celebrate the incredible work happening within the community.

This photo features our CEO, Precious, and Sales & Marketing Manager, Kelly (clear winners of the duck lips category!) alongside Precious’s whānau from Maiden Tāmaki Rongoā, who were proud winners of the Environmental Excellence Award. 🌿🏆

A huge congratulations to Maiden Tāmaki Rongoā on this well-deserved recognition, and congratulations to all finalists and winners. It was an honour to be part of an evening that celebrated innovation, resilience, and the strength of local business.

Congratulations

A special milestone for the team too, with Kate celebrating her first centre title and Pania earning her Gold Star 💫

We’re incredibly proud of you Pania — best of luck for nationals. We know you’ll do us proud, and most importantly, have an amazing time together 💛
