Two recent additions to the orphanage:
Ollie the olive, and .. Oakey the oak?
Anyway, the english oak was saved from felling and the olive is a bit of an experiment - might go for a bigger bag on the next one! But they are very hardy so I think it will be alright!

Excavator mulching is great for clearing vegetation.

We can:
* Clear out an overgrown yard.
* Tidy up your big tree clearance job.
* Mulch down thick kikuyu up or down a bank.
* Clean around overgrown planting and over fences.
* Push back the gorse that’s spreading in the paddocks.
* Clear whole paddocks, valleys and waterways.

The biggest benefit is leaving that thick layer of vegetation to stop gorse and wooly nightshade (etc) seeds seeing the sun and germinating. Start a spray program after and grass will beat the scrub back.
Job done.
Don’t waste money spraying first - spray after!

I found our drain!

Pōhutukawa are incredibly tough, but when it comes to water sitting around their roots, they don’t like it at all.
When we shift these trees into poor draining soil we need to come up with a plan. This tree basically sat down on top of several underground services, so the usual soak pit underneath wasn’t an option.
We installed drainage metal around the base of the tree instead, and ran it out a channel down the bank.
Unfortunately shortly afterwards, other contractors came and spread soil around the section closing our drain.

Shifted this tricky little acer in Waihi this week. The tree could be around 70 years old and was planted on the property of the original foreman’s house for when the Martha gold mine was first excavated.
Great to be preserving a little bit of history for the area!
