It’s that time of year; morning teas, work parties, CHRISTMAS day, food and alcohol coming at us from all directions.
It is common to put on weight over Christmas, but it doesn’t have to be that way if you’re conscious of making the right choices and keeping active.
Here are a few tips to survive the festive season;
• If you are drinking, decide on your limit before you go out and stick to it. Drink sparkling water between drinks (for the bubbles) and make sure you have a water jug on your table to avoid using alcohol to quench your thirst.
• Have a dessert or an entrée, but not both, and share a dessert if you can.
• Before you go out to a Christmas event, eat something small but high in protein such as a pottle of greek yoghurt with some slivered almonds or a hard-boiled egg/tuna or peanut butter on grainy toast. If you aren’t ravenous at the event you will make better food decisions and are more likely to eat smaller portions.
• If you are faced with many Christmas morning teas, offer to bring something in. Some examples include strawberries and banana dipped in dark chocolate, raspberries with chocolate chips inside, tomato and thin mozzarella slices with a balsamic vinaigrette, figs stuffed with low-fat ricotta or vegie sticks with a plain hummus. This way you can still participate but you know you are making a healthier choice.
• Don’t let your gym routine go out the window. You’ve worked so hard to make it a habit, so try and keep it up where you can.
