You eat well.

When was the last time you checked its vital signs?

Quick health check:

Are you properly insured — reviewed, updated, current?
If everything stopped tomorrow… could you keep operating?
Do you actually understand your cash flow — or just glance at it?
Are your relationships solid — your team, your suppliers, your clients?

And here’s the one most people avoid:

Do you plan for profit?

Because turnover means nothing if there’s nothing left over.

Revenue might look impressive…
But leftover is what gives you options.
Stability.
Growth.

A healthy business doesn’t just survive.

So You Want to Start a Business? Read This First.

The “new year, new me” energy is strong right now…
And maybe this is the year you finally back yourself and start your own business.

But here’s the truth no one puts in the glossy Instagram quotes:

Starting a business isn’t about the logo.
It’s not about the name.
And it’s definitely not about quitting your job on a wave of adrenaline.

You have options.
✔ Build from scratch
✔ Buy an existing business
✔ Step into a franchise

Each one can work — if you choose the right one for you.

Before you leap, ask yourself the hard questions:
• Do I have the resilience for this?
• Am I solving a real problem?
• Is there actual demand?
• What will make me different?
• Can this model pay me properly — not just “cover costs”?

Here’s the part most people skip:
Businesses only survive if they’re profitable.
And they’re only enjoyable if they’re well run.

The difference between chaos and confidence?
Clarity. Structure. Financial discipline. Support.

And please — don’t try to figure it all out alone.

Get advice. Get a sounding board. Get someone experienced beside you while you make big decisions.

If this is your year, do it properly.

I’ve just got back from Queenstown and Christchurch, onboarding new clients — and honestly, this is why I love what I do.
In Queenstown, I worked with a couple running two thriving businesses side by side — life partners and business partners. Not because anything’s broken… they just wanted clarity, direction, and a plan that actually sticks.
Then Christchurch — I welcomed onboard a real go-getting founder building a branding and design agency. Big energy, huge talent, already winning… and now we’re adding structure and strategy so it scales without burnout.
And tomorrow? I’m off to sunny Nelson to welcome a mother–daughter team into the fold. I mean… “I love working with grass-roots small business in NZ — the backbone of this country.”
That’s the magic for me — real people, real progress, right across Aotearoa.
Happy New Year, team. Coming up is the Year of the Horse… but this doesn’t feel like a trot. This year feels like it’s going to be a full-on gallop. And last year can GET!!!!!

I’m out here in my alfresco office — aka under the brolly in the backyard — doing my own planning for the New Year.

And I thought over the next week, I’ll share my three best business tips.

Because honestly… the amount of “expert advice” out there is wild. It’s noisy, it’s confusing, and half of it makes running a business sound like you need a PhD just to send an invoice.

My job as a business coach is to simplify things for busy business owners — because it does not need to be that complicated.

So here’s tip number one:

Tip #1: Profit isn’t a bonus — it’s the whole point.
Turnover means nothing if there’s nothing left.

Decide your profit first — then build the business around delivering it.
Every cost, every decision, every hire… should serve that goal.

Profit needs to be your number one KPI.

And yep — I’m going to say it: as Kiwis, we can get a bit weird about making profit. Like it’s something to feel guilty about.
It’s not.

Profit is what makes your business stable.
It protects your job, and it protects your team’s jobs too.

So don’t be ashamed of it. Be proud of it.
Because passion doesn’t pay the bills — profit does.

This year has been hard.
And I know many business owners won’t truly switch off over Christmas.

But if your business is still standing, still operating, and still serving, that tells you something important.

With the right systems, structure, and clarity in place, your business doesn’t just survive tough seasons, it comes out stronger and more stable.

2026 can be about control, confidence, and growth… not firefighting.
