The Employment Leave Bill has now passed its second reading in Parliament.

While the Bill continues to progress, the debate it seems is far from over. It now moves to the Committee of the whole House, where MP’s will consider amendments before its third and final reading.

It’s been a while. A few decades to be fair.
Let’s hope it’s been worth the wait.

The Select Committee report on the Employment Leave Bill is due today (EDIT: link to report here - https://selectcommittees.parliament.nz/v/SelectCommitteeReport/d931c8e6-2265-4883-bead-08dee095f0e7?lang=en). From my observations, the public feedback was extremely varied - some incredibly supportive whereas many firmly opposed. That’s the point of public consultation - to hear from the people before a law is passed - and this Bill was nowhere near unanimous by public opinion.

So the question is, will the report reflect these widely varied views?

I’m gonna be keeping a close eye on the second reading that’s for sure because if is passes without practical pathways to address the valid concerns raised by many, what does that mean for the people who will be most affected?

Final part, and quite honestly, the most important part.

Having the right people at the table, not fighting to be right, but to do what’s right.

If not, forget it. It’ll never work.

In saying that, I am hopeful that as a collective, we can change things for the betterment of everyone. Where everyone wins, or at least isn’t subject to a loss or left holding the baby.

Phase 2, Part 3 - Get organised and get the right people around the table

Honestly, this is what will determine make or break

Kotahitanga. Open minds. Open ears. Critical thinking. Not fighting to be right, but doing what’s right……please people 🙏

You best believe I’m advocating hard for my payroll peeps.

We gotta put some damn respect on the profession and stop treating our payroll teams like the clean up committee - though I must admit, the payroll professionals I have had the honour of working with over the past 20+ years are magicians, masters in their craft - you’d be surprised (or horrified) to know how many disasters we fix behind closed doors 🫣😳🔮✨

🤔 This is the question that I hope all Select Committee members, Officials, Employers and Unions are contemplating right now.

Knowing that these changes could make some employees financially worse off, how does that sit with you? And how can we collectively solve it?

Spoiler alert - there is always a solution, but you must define the problem first, and in this instance, solving one issue shouldn’t then create another one. That is the problem to solve.
