Five shifts from my time at Takiura
4️⃣ Rangatiratanga

This post reflects on how my understanding of rangatiratanga has shifted through my journey at Takiura - from seeing leadership at the front, to understanding leadership as collective, intergenerational, and carried through whānau.

This is the fourth reflection in a 5-part series from my time at Takiura.

3️⃣ Tipuranga

This post reflects on my growth journey and how my ability to tū ki te kōrero i te reo Māori has shifted - from being overwhelmed by emotion, to being able to stand, breathe, and keep speaking

This is the third reflection in a 5-part series from my time at Takiura.

Five shifts from my time at Takiura
2️⃣ Te ngākau me te tirohanga Māori

This post reflects on how rumaki reo reawakened my ngākau Māori and reshaped how I see my roles, responsibilities, and leadership as an urban Māori in Tāmaki Makaurau.

This is the second reflection in a 5-part series from my time at Takiura.

Five shifts from my time at Takiura
1️⃣ Auahatanga

I went to Takiura to strengthen my reo.
I didn’t expect creativity to become such a big part of that journey.

Writing pukapuka for my tamāhine, writing waiata, creating resources — auahatanga became another way to learn, speak, and share mātauranga.

This is the first reflection in a 5-part series from my time at Takiura.

After working flexibly for the last couple of years, I thought I could keep working while studying te reo full-time.

I thought I could do both.
I thought I’d want to.

But I haven’t.

Instead, I’ve slowed down — to give my full energy to learning.

Finishing my first wāhanga at Te Wānanga Takiura Rumaki Reo has already unlocked something in me.

I share some reflections on what’s shifting for me — as a māmā, wahine Māori, and kaupapa Māori practitioner on my recent blog post.

Over 8 months, I worked alongside , a rōpū of community practitioners in Tāmaki — as they unpacked and deepened their kaupapa Māori practice.

We held monthly wānanga, making space for honest kōrero, and reflected on what it means to live kaupapa Māori practice — especially in a climate where kaupapa Māori leadership often comes with pressure, challenges, and the need to stand strong in your values.

I’ve reflected on our haerenga in a recent blog post — what stood out, what we learnt, and some whakaaro for others growing kaupapa Māori practice in their own spaces.

He mihi nui ki a rāua ko
ngā manukura o te kaupapa nei!

This whakataukī guides everything we do at Uia Te Kura. It’s at the heart of our approach—gaining insight, weaving understanding, and creating space for growth.

Over the next couple of days, I’ll be sharing details about my 1:1 coaching service, including Foundation Wānanga sessions. These are a chance to reflect, gain clarity, and take meaningful steps forward in your kaupapa or path.

With limited spaces available, watch this space or DM me for more info!

Meet Deane!
Wahine Māori | Ngāti Porou | Waikato-Tainui

Kia ora, I’m Deane, and I lead Uia Te Kura. I’m an urban Māori consultant and practitioner.

Over the years, I’ve worked in government and community spaces, building a deep understanding of public systems, whānau voices, and opportunities for change.

I established Uia Te Kura to walk alongside changemakers, organisations, and communities. Through this mahi, I help grow leadership, make sense of ideas, and bridge cultures, systems, and people.

Every part of Uia Te Kura has a story – from the ingoa to the tohu and even the colours we chose.

🍂 Our name, with the help of Matua Paraone Tai Tin, reflects curiosity, intuition, and uncovering the heart of every kaupapa.

🍂 The tohu, designed by symbolises connection, leadership, and whakapapa – linking together the past, present, and future.

🍂 The rich kōkōwai tones ground us in the strength and resilience of Papatūānuku and remind us of the stories we carry.
