Today, while my son was in Auckland attending appointments, I had the pleasure of doing his paper run in the rain, well partially me. I say pleasure intentionally as it was a grounding experience and a time to reflect. Mass kudos to those who work outside in various conditions day in and day out!
I had a negative mindset at first but had to show up, that’s what it’s about right, showing up even when we don’t feel like it! While I was effective at his job, I certainly wasn’t efficient. He completes his paper run in 51 minutes on his bike while I was pounding the pavement for a lot longer. Then I got the team involved, well tried to, one of our daughters was being negative and didn’t want to help, the other was excited at the chance. She had a positive mindset and saw it as an opportunity to 1) earn money 2) help her brother who is always helping her and 3) jump in puddles while having fun…. a totally different mindset. She completed this job with some running and some leaning out the car window squealing with joy.
It got me thinking, here is 1 job done 4 different ways, some effective, some efficient and effective, some effective, efficient and fun. What does it boil down to, showing up, a positive mindset, getting the job done and getting support when you need it, while finding fun along the way.
When a positive mindset and competency combine, it’s a powerful thing!
