If the government were serious about making NZ a better place to live they wouldn't be macking it so that the rich get richer off the backs of the poor. Many large successful companies make their money by paying workers thr minimum wage which isn't enough to live on. Back before neoliberalism and the Employment Contracts Act of the Bolger and Richardson government that basically removed any bargaining power the worker had by making it so that a company didn't have to negotiate with a union, we had industry awards which meant that everyone was able to earn a wage they could live on. The Employment Contracts Act removed that! Even Jim Bolger whose government brought this in admitted in 2017 that the unions needed more power! And that the Trickle Down Effect which says that if you put money in at the top it will trickle down to the workers, didn't work. This effect is the Macon premise that neoliberal politics is built on!
Now we have a situation where people who work full time can't afford to live! Rents are horrendous, the cost of food is crazy and people are living in cars because that is all they can afford!
This government is only interested in you if you are like Luxon, wealthy and sorted! If you are unlucky enough to be on a benefit then you are in his words a "bottom feeder"! And considering the Finance Minister made thousands of public workers redundant, it is no wonder that Wellington in particular is had its economy dropping like a stone!!
Willis was so mean that she wouldn't even raise the minimum wage by the rate of inflation despite all the advise being to do so!
Now that Christmas is fast approaching places like the food banks are going to need donations more than ever and it shouldn't be this way if we had a government that cared at all!!
More people are living in cars and more kids are skipping school because they don’t have enough food or uniforms, the Salvation Army says as it launches its annual appeal.
