We hear some of these terms regularly, but what do they really mean, and what attributes do these leadership styles or leaders demonstrate?

Moreover what is thought leadership and how is this relevant and applicable?

Happy New Year from team LEO Aotearoa.

A new year is a chance to pause, reflect, and step forward with intention. While challenges are part of the journey, we all have the ability to shape how we grow through them.

As the year begins, take a moment to think about what mattered in 2025 and what you’d like the year ahead to hold. Where would you like to be this time next year?

As always, remember to care for yourself along the way. In healthcare, caring for ourselves is essential to caring well for our patients and whānau — you cannot give what you do not have.

Whether you’re back at work or still taking a break, make time to check in with yourself and keep that practice going.

Wishing you a year of purpose, wellbeing, and positive momentum.

See you all soon!

What a fabulous week it was in beautiful Taranaki! Ngā mihi to Te Whatu Ora | Health New Zealand, Taranaki, for hosting LEO.

With nearly 50 personnel completing the programme, it’s inspiring to see such a strong collective commitment to leadership and the development of others.

A special shout-out to Cohort 2. With 518 years of combined experience in the room, we were never short on wisdom as we learned and grew together. You can’t beat kanohi ki te kanohi — human-centred, authentic, and grounded in hauora.

Ka mau te wehi team Taranaki!

See you again soon!

Beautiful Taranaki, Aotearoa - New Zealand

We celebrated the opportunity to bring LEO to Taranaki last week.

Eighteen leaders from nursing, midwifery, speech-language therapy, social work, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, radiography, and rural and community health came together for three days of leadership development and collaboration.

Whilst healthcare can be a demanding role at times, personnel show up every day to make a difference in caring for our people, whānau, and communities, and love the work they do.🩵🩵

Thank you to Health New Zealand, team Taranaki, for your hospitality and investment in the LEO leadership programme for your staff.

See you again in a couple of weeks for cohort 2.

Very excited to be travelling to Taranaki this week for Te Whatu Ora | Health New Zealand Taranaki’s first LEO programme.

Whilst we have welcomed participants from Taranaki on previous courses, this one’s for just them!

Great to see the support and investment from senior nursing and allied health leaders, into their workforce.

See you soon!

Our first LEO Common Room kicked off this week! ✨

We are building a LEO community or alumni where graduates can connect, support and learn from one another.

Sometimes it is just nice to connect informally with other professionals and refill your cup.

We revisit the LEO conceptual framework in its practical application.

Keen to know more? Check out the LEO website for a Common Room date and time that suits you.

PS: You need to be a LEO graduate! We look forward to seeing you 💫

Quarterly franchise reporting time to the US, and it's time to compile the latest participant feedback for this quarter. I thought I would share some with you. Participants are asked two questions after a tick box learning check. These two questions are:

Would you recommend this programme to others?
Will your leadership change as a result of doing this course?

This programme is an eye-opener to me. It made me realise things I had to change to become a good leader. I have learned a lot, especially in communicating effectively to people around me

I really enjoyed this programme, lots of practical tools to implement straight away. The programme was very inclusive, provided a safe and constructive environment for learning, and not just for people who hold the title of 'manager'. I feel motivated to return to work and inspired to lead change.

This has been an amazing course! I had heard lots of positive things about this course before, and it has been extremely helpful for me.

Yes, I will definitely recommend this course, one of my biggest concerns coming in was around having difficult conversations. I believe LEO has provided me with solid tips on how to have these conversations.

The education felt personal and relatable. It has been a reflective three days, in that I recognised perhaps I might be some of the problem and how I can improve as a leader. After this 3-day course, I realised how important communication is in leadership. I believe that unhealthy behaviours can be learned and if so, unlearned. Thank you, I really needed this course.

This programme was eye opening for me in respect of building relationships.

I am more understanding of different frameworks to use. This course should be compulsory for leaders, and especially new leaders.

Yes, I recommend this programme to others. It is a lot of key things to learn and I will use the learning to help me lead.

Yes, discuss at MDT with my colleagues and direct supervisees if looking into leadership. Yes more open-hearted.

Beneficial to identify ways of being and doing. Identifying 'traps' that we can fall into and get a bit stuck on. Allows us to look from a participant, a leader, and an observer perspective. If everyone came to conversations with their heart at peace,' dynamics would be greatly enhanced.

Extremely valuable learning for anyone employed in healthcare. This training has highlighted for me some of the issues with some of the existing management in the wider service, and where the gaps are. I feel empowered to change some of my own communication styles in order to be clearer in articulating expectations.

Very good course and beneficial to do, particularly around becoming more self aware as a leader.

LEO has given very useful and practical tools and knowledge, some of which can be implemented immediately into everyday practice.

Empowerment

1: the act or action of empowering someone or something: the granting of the power, right, or authority to perform various acts or duties
2: the state of being empowered to do something: the power, right, or authority to do something. (Merriam-Webster, 2025).

Are your staff empowered? Empowerment is a word often thrown around; a buzzword, if you like. How do we take the concept of empowerment and turn it into actionable and measurable outcomes for ourselves and our teams.

Within the LEO programme, we deep-dive into the concepts of responsibility, authority, and accountability as a starting point to empowerment.

What is authority?
Did you know there are 4 levels of authority?
Not knowing your level of authority can not only lead to confusion and mistakes, but also disempowerment of your employees.

What is responsibility? Does it feel as if it always falls to you?

What is accountability, and how can we uphold it? The standard we walk past is the standard we accept kind of thinking.

To lead an empowered team, these three concepts are foundational.

Leading an empowered team is challenging, yet transformational for the individuals, team, and the organisation.
