Please like and share, Mining Supporters West Coast – Supporting Mining & Minerals on the West Coast

It’s time for the voices of the West Coast to be heard.
The West Coast is entering an exciting period of opportunity, with new mining and minerals projects underway and others in the pipeline. These projects have the potential to create around 1,200 new direct jobs, with that number expected to grow as further opportunities progress.
And the impact goes well beyond the jobs on the mine site. Mining supports approximately another 1.5 jobs in associated and support roles, creating flow-on benefits throughout our towns and communities, from local businesses and contractors to schools, community organisations and families.
The West Coast is already leading the country in employment growth, with employment for West Coast residents increasing 1.6% while national employment fell 0.3%.
Yet, too often, the voices of people who support mining and the opportunities it creates are drowned out by misinformation, negativity or people who simply don’t understand how important these industries are to our region.
This page is here to change that.
Mining Supporters West Coast, is a platform for people who support responsible mining and minerals development and want to see the West Coast thrive. It’s a place to:
Share factual information about mining and minerals projects.
Highlight employment, training and business opportunities.
Keep our communities informed about what’s happening across the sector.
Explain what the minerals and products we produce are actually used for in everyday life.
Celebrate the people and businesses that make our communities work.
Share the positive economic and social flow-on effects of mining.
Give local people a respectful platform to have their voices heard.
The Bathurst Denniston Plateaux project has highlighted just how important these opportunities are to the region. The potential loss of more than 400 direct roles, along with the implications for the Midland rail line, demonstrates what is at stake for Buller, Grey and the wider West Coast. Losing major industries and infrastructure can have consequences that reach far beyond the immediate workforce and into the heart of a community.
We’ve also been inspired by community-led groups such as the Santana Mine Supporters page in Central Otago, which has shown the strength of local people coming together to make their support heard.
We believe there is room for respectful debate, but there must also be room for our side of the story.
Mining has been part of the West Coast for generations, and responsible development can continue to provide jobs, investment, opportunities and support for the communities we call home.
This is our region. These are our communities. These are our jobs, businesses and families.
It’s time to stand up, show our support and make sure the voices of people who believe in the future of the West Coast are heard.
Join us. Share the facts. Share the opportunities. Support our communities. Mining Supporters West Coast, supporting mining, minerals, jobs and a thriving West Coast. Please like and share this page to follow.

There was strong interest in the future of mining at Development West Coast's Mining Information Session in Greymouth last night.

Terra Firma Mining Ltd joined the Rua Gold - Reefton Operations team, engaging with members of the public, discussing growth in the mining industry, and answering questions about Auld Creek Mine and upcoming employment opportunities.

It was encouraging to see the level of interest in what future mining projects could bring to the region—from skilled employment and training through to opportunities for local businesses and the wider supply chain.

The Spring Creek project is an important part of our commitment to the region and to maintaining and developing the skills, experience, and capability that underpin New Zealand’s underground mining industry.

Having these conversations is an important part of building understanding around mining and ensuring that people in the West Coast community are aware of pathways into the industry.

Thank you to Development West Coast and the Ministry of Social Development NZ (MSD) for hosting the session and bringing together industry, training organisations, and the local community, and to Tania Gibson for Grey District Mayor, who continues to support and advocate for the industry.

It was great to have members of the Terra Firma team attend the AusIMM New Zealand Branch Conference in Rotorua over the past three days.

Our Technical & Projects Manager, Alex Mayhead, presented a paper on our Spring Creek project, which was very well received. The presentation highlighted the detailed design, mine layout and geological model underpinning the project, showcasing the depth of technical work that has gone into its development.

Our Managing Director, Lincoln Smith, also attended the conference and was recently recognised as a Fellow of the AusIMM — in recognition of his leadership and contributions to the mining industry.

A great few days of technical discussion, knowledge sharing and connecting with others across the industry. Thanks to AusIMM and everyone involved in putting together a valuable conference.

There's no substitute for getting underground and seeing equipment perform in real mining conditions.

Our Managing Director, Lincoln Smith, and Engineering Manager, Matt Tregoweth, have just completed a productive tour across New South Wales, evaluating underground coal and hard rock mining equipment for potential deployment in New Zealand.

The visit focused on assessing:
• Continuous miners and haulage systems for our underground coal projects.
• Electrical recoding and upgrade opportunities to support our operations.
• Narrow vein loaders for our hard rock mining projects with Simon Delander

While Australia and New Zealand share many similarities, our underground mining environments often present very different challenges. The geological conditions, mining methods, and operational requirements in New Zealand mean that off-the-shelf Australian equipment is rarely a direct fit. A key focus of the trip was identifying where proven equipment platforms can be adapted and engineered to meet the unique demands of New Zealand's underground coal and hard rock operations.

A big thank you to Scott Vella and the team at Phoenix Underground, and Chris Hamilton and the team at Hill End Mine, for their hospitality, technical insights, and the opportunity to see some equipment operating in the field. These discussions are invaluable as we work with our partners to develop solutions that are fit for purpose rather than simply fit from the factory.

We look forward to applying the knowledge gained from this visit to deliver safe, reliable, and productive equipment tailored to the unique conditions of New Zealand mining.

Thanks Jacob Bellamy, Jacob Martin, Graeme Goodfellow, Wade Tsakissiris for your time.

Alex Mayhead and Max Roberts have been carrying out site investigations for the Rua Gold - Reefton Operations processing plant.

Their work has involved collecting ground condition data to support the engineering design and planning for the project as it moves forward.

Safety has been a key focus throughout the work. Alex and Max have worked closely with the project team to make sure the right safety processes are followed, including pre-start meetings, identifying hazards, assessing risks, and regularly reviewing site conditions before work begins.

Having experienced people on site means good-quality information is collected, risks can be identified early, and project decisions are based on accurate site data.

Thanks to Alex and Max for their hard work, professionalism, and commitment to delivering safe, high-quality results for the Rua Gold processing plant project.

📣📣 SIGNED MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING 📣📣

Rua Gold (“Rua”) has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with New Zealand based Mining services company Terra Firma Mining Ltd (“Terra Firma” or “TFM”).

Working closely with our engineering firm Mining One, Terra Firma has been supporting the Auld Creek project team in the preparation of the Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) which was released earlier this month.

The MOU formalises Terra Firma’s involvement in the current Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) and Fast-track studies, various field investigations, stakeholder engagement and preparation for mining operations.

Terra Firma has an operations base and workshop in Reefton with a strong capacity to provide people, equipment and expertise to support mining operations. TFM has recently hosted a number of delegations from local and regional government with Rua representatives to provide a briefing on initial mining operational plans at Auld Creek.

CEO Robert Eckford said “This agreement is a solid initial step in showcasing our plans to prioritise the engagement of West Coast business & people as we develop our plans for Auld Creek.”

The Rua Gold team has submitted a Fast-track referral application which is before the New Zealand Government for assessment, if the referral is successful the Company plans to submit a Fast-track substantive application in the last quarter of 2026.
