Last month marked 10 years since smoke alarms became mandatory in New Zealand rental homes.

It's also a timely reminder that smoke alarms don't last forever. If an alarm is more than 10 years old, it may need to be replaced.

Landlords need to keep smoke alarms in working order, while tenants need to replace expired batteries and report any issues as soon as possible.
