My latest article on what I am learning about the MAorio language through food?

I have zero ability to korero in Te Reo Maori. However, Te Wiki o te Reo Maori is an opportunity to share how Aotearoa’s food industry has gifted me a greater understanding of elements of Te Reo we hear day to day but only understand superficially.

In this week of Te Wiki o te Reo Maori I reflect on some of Aotearoa's outstanding businesses and people I have worked with who have helped me understand more about our indigenous food culture. Jeremy Gardiner

Over years of muddling with different languages, the greatest pleasure I’ve taken from some ability to communicate with people in their language is opening the doors to understanding different cultures. The simple understanding that you can convey an idea in one language that may not exist in anot...

Observation #5 in Marketing in the COVID-era series. Will this be the last? I will have to stay agile.

Opportunities are emerging all over the place

Although I noted yesterday that some COVID related opportunties are already fading away, adapting to the Covid challenge is revealing valuable, new, long term opportunities. Here are a couple of high profile examples for food lovers. Hypermeat, a new partnership between Hyperide and Neat Meat arose to deliver premium quality food staples over lockdown. Utilising Neat Meat’s food network and HyperRides’s great online fulfillment model the business continues to grow post lock-down.

SOS Business, a Not for Profit established to help cafes and restaurants sell vouchers during lockdown has discovered a life of its own and has already been sold to international partners to maintain and grow the service into the future.

What opportunities or categories have you seen emerge as a result of COVID-19.

And so we continue. The fourth in my series of observations about marketing in New Zealand in the era of COVID-19.

We are Already Moving On.

Marketing opportunities that arose during lockdown haven already disappeared. - In one example a South Island winery successfully appealed to their database, family friends, suppliers and wider networks to shore up lost sales with very popular 12 bottle deals. However, after the initial shock of lockdown uptake has declined as supporters move their discretionary income elsewhere.

What opportunities did you take advantage of that you can see see will only be temporary?

5. Keep selling – many young export businesses have been asking me, “Should I be scaling back my export activity?” In answer, anyone opening new markets knows it takes time. Try to maintain momentum. The last thing you want is to loose momentum waiting for Covid to pass. Work on how you are going to succeed in this environment. As conditions improve, hopefully you will reap the upside of a simpler global trading environment. A startup quoted a great Tony Robins line to me this morning, “Winter isn’t forever. Winter is always followed by spring … it is how you take advantage of the4 season you are in…”

Here is my latest LinkedIn article as I start to cut through the speculation and hypotheticals and look at what we are really learning about marketing in the COVID-19 era.

When New Zealand and the world went into lockdown there was much speculation about how businesses would make it through COVID-19, how to come out ahead of the game and how COVID was going to change consumers and the marketplace forever. Well, we are well into it now.

If you are a business in Auckland 'agility' is again front of mind. Today is not the day to be reading business theory but here is a message to add to your thinking from HBR.

"People often resist change unless the new way of doing something appears to be clearly better. But to implement strategy effectively, leaders should do the opposite: Don’t hesitate to move forward with change unless the old way is clearly better."
