Could you live in Wellington? 🌬️

Throwback to our trip there last year, still one of our favourite spots in NZ. Smaller footprint than Auckland, huge creative energy, proper city buzz, but yes, the wind and hills are real.

A few honest notes if Wellington’s on your radar:
🚡 The cable car up to the Botanic Gardens is a must, cheap and gives you the best view of the harbour
🦁 Wellington Zoo is a great half-day if you’ve got kids
🏛️ Te Papa Museum is free and genuinely world-class
🌬️ The wind is not a meme, it’s real, pack accordingly

Immigration NZ just put out a genuinely useful explainer on skilled residence pathways 👇

This is exactly the kind of thing we point people to instead of guessing. We’re not visa advisors, so when it comes to pathways, requirements, and eligibility, the official INZ source is always the one to trust, not us, not Facebook groups, not “someone told me.”

Worth a watch if residency pathways are on your radar.

What a week's groceries actually costs in NZ 🛒

This is the one that catches South Africans off guard. Not rent, not petrol. The weekly shop.

🛒 A family spends roughly $200–$280/week on groceries alone (not takeaways).
🧈 Butter sits around $10. In the world's biggest dairy exporting country. Yes, really.
💡 Switching to Pak'nSave from New World or Woolworths saves most families $15–$30 a shop. Over a year that's real money.
📋 Meal planning and a list cuts most households' spend by 15–20%.

We budgeted for groceries before we moved, but the pace at which prices have climbed still caught us off guard. And judging by the posts I keep seeing from other Saffa families here, we're not alone in feeling the squeeze. This isn't about poor planning. It's just how fast the cost of living moves.

Why we chose Napier 👇

When we left Cape Town, we could've landed anywhere in NZ. We chose Napier — and four years in, it's been the right call for our family.

☀️ The pull: sunshine, the coast, Art Deco charm, and an easy, low-traffic pace. Median rent sits around $640/week.

🚲 The everyday stuff: an easy, outdoors kind of life — bikes, beaches, and space for the kids to just be kids. That freedom is hard to put a price on.

🎩 A local highlight: Napier hosts NZ's iconic Art Deco Festival every year — vintage cars, period dress, the lot. It's one of the country's most unique events, right on our doorstep.

The honest bit: Napier's a small city and the job market is tighter than Auckland or Wellington. But for family life? Hard to beat.
