We understand Matariki to be a truncated version of the long name ‘Ngā Mata o te Ariki Tawhirimātea’ which translates meaning ‘the eyes of the god Tawhirimātea’. This name originates from the turmoil which occurred soon after the separation of Ranginui and Papatuānuku. Of from the panthe...

💫⛵Te Waka o Rangi⛵💫

🎉 We are excited to announce that we have a new poster out just in time for Matariki💫

This A1 poster shows the stars and the names that make up Te Waka o Rangi. Captained by Taramainuku, Te Waka o Rangi is said to carry our dead across the night skies until the time of Matariki. That is when Taramainuku casts the spirits of the dead into the heavens to become stars✨

Kua whetūrangihia koe - You have become a star ⭐

To purcahse the poster head over to our website at 👉🏾 www.livingbythestars.co.nz

Te mātahi o te tau

Matariki is a time to gather, care for our natural places and give thanks for what we have.

Visitors enter Waitangi Park through Te Whanau Mārama Waharoa – Family of Light gateway that leads to the Atea a Rangi, a traditional celestial star compass navigators use for wayfinding across the Pacific Ocean.

Caring for the environment is one of the values of Matariki and a promise we wish for the future. Waitangi Park is an example of that promise in it’s transformation from an illegal trash dump to a regional treasure
