Age caps. 45 for Australia, 56 for New Zealand. If you are over 45 and thinking about Australia, that visa door is closed. New Zealand gives you more runway — but only up to 56. These are not soft guidelines, they are hard visa age limits, and most migrants I talk to do not find out until it is too late.

Knowing this early changes everything about your plan.

7 seconds moment of truth. Recruiters are not reading your CV. They are just scanning it. Human eyes look at CVs for less than seven seconds per CV until a shortlist is made. Most migrant CVs are written with too many words and not enough value. They are not prepared to be scanned. That is a problem I see every single week.

The format, the order, the first line, the metrics: These things decide whether you get a look or a pass.

Artisan trades. Always in demand.

Electricians, plumbers, carpenters, welders — New Zealand and Australia cannot get enough of them. While other sectors tighten up, the skilled trades pipeline stays open. I have seen migrants in artisan trades move through the visa process faster and land permanent work sooner than almost any other group.

If you can to high quality work with your hands, you are in a strong position.

The transport and logistics sector in New Zealand had 7,136 active job listings nationally in early 2026. Auckland alone had 1,894 openings. Wellington 543. Christchurch 516.

Truck driver salaries in New Zealand average NZD 65,000 to 75,000. Heavy and Class 5 drivers with experience reach 84,744 (Seek NZ data, May 2026). Warehouse Managers earn around 75,000.

This is one of the sectors where supply has not caught up with demand. Driver and warehouse shortages cascade across ports, distribution, and last mile delivery, and New Zealand mirrors that pressure.

If you have a Class 5 licence, heavy vehicle experience, or a warehouse operations background, you have a real pathway here. The AEWV (Accredited Employer Work Visa) covers many transport occupations through accredited employers.

If you work in aged care anywhere in the world, this is for you.

New Zealand Treasury reported in 2024 that aged residential care needs 12,000 to 16,000 additional workers over the next decade. Every new resident in a rest home or aged care facility means another worker is needed. The ratio is roughly one to one.

Registered Nurse in aged care sits on the Green List Tier 1. That is Straight to Residence. You get a job offer with an accredited employer and you apply for permanent residency immediately. No two year wait.

Salary for a Registered Nurse in aged care is NZD 80,000 to 90,000. Healthcare Assistant pay ranges from 22 to 29 dollars per hour. The big employers actively recruiting internationally include Ryman Healthcare, Summerset, Oceania, Metlifecare, Arvida, Bupa NZ, and Heritage Lifecare.

The honest barriers: Nursing Council of New Zealand registration for nurses. Careerforce Level 3 or 4 for caregivers. English language testing for nursing.

If aged care is your field, this is one of the fastest residency pathways New Zealand offers right now.

Master Builders Australia projects the building and construction industry needs 486,000 new workers by the end of 2026. Roughly half (229,000) are in technician and trade roles.

Denita Wawn, CEO of Master Builders Australia, put it plainly: construction is the backbone of the Australian economy, employing about 1.3 million people, and with the population projected to grow by over 50 per cent between 2022 and 2060 to nearly 40 million people, the industry will need a significant workforce.

The visa data backs the demand. Jobs and Skills Australia reports Australia granted 5,485 temporary skilled visas in construction in 2024 to 2025, with 56.4 percent for Skill Level 3 occupations. NSW, WA, Queensland, and Victoria were the top destinations.

If you work in construction trades anywhere in the world, the structural demand will run for decades. Population growth alone guarantees it.

Under the old Australian work visa, you had 60 days to find a new employer if you lost your job.

Under the new Skills in Demand visa, you have 180 days.

That one change shifts a lot of the risk calculation for skilled migrants considering Australia.

If the 60-day rule was part of what held you back, the rule changed in December 2024.

Worth revisiting.

Two data points stopped me when I was reading the latest Australian skilled migration analysis.

The first: Medical Practitioners recorded 556% growth in TSS visa grants in Major Cities between 2018 and 2022. The highest growth rate of any occupation-region combination in the country.

That is a sector in structural crisis being held together by international recruitment.

The second: Registered Nurses had 7,707 job advertisements in October 2025 alone. The highest job ad volume of any occupation in Australia. And the 2025 Occupation Shortage List identifies 139 occupations in persistent shortage from 2021 to 2025. Registered Nurses are consistently among the most frequently nominated.

Employment projections show 40,400 additional nursing positions needed by November 2026. Aged and Disabled Carers project 74,900 additional positions at 28% growth. That is the largest absolute increase of any occupation in the country.

Domestic nursing graduation produces roughly 15,000 per year against a net requirement of 25,000. The 10,000 annual gap is two thirds of domestic output. This is a structural feature of the Australian healthcare system.

Construction tells a parallel story. Carpenters are the single highest-volume trade occupation for skilled migration in Australia. The 2025 Occupation Shortage List identifies 71 Technician and Trade Worker occupations in shortage, which is 51% of all persistent shortages. Australia needs 50,000 new construction trade completions per year against 25,000 annual apprenticeship completions. Migration provides the difference.

If you are a healthcare professional or a skilled trades worker, Australia is actively waiting for qualified people who know how to position themselves correctly.

Understanding the skills assessment process, the salary thresholds, and the state nomination priorities is where the work happens. That is what I help people navigate.

Comment your occupation and I will tell you what the current shortage data shows for your field.
