Accolade customers (and potential customers!) - we’re delighted to introduce you to Nick Wertheim, Accolade Packaging’s new Sales Manager. (Three months is still ‘new’, right?)

Nick joined the Accolade team on April 18, bringing seven and a half years’ experience in the plastics industry with him. His previous roles involved injection moulding and thermoforming plastics (in which roll stock plastic is pressed into a shape, such as pie trays for example) so, whilst Nick is familiar with plastic materials and the wider NZ sector, this new role will expand his focus to sales management and flexible packaging production.

Nick is based at Accolade’s Takanini site, which focusses on packaging (machinery build and servicing take place at Te Puna and Albany), and he has been busy learning the new production processes behind the work we do here.

Whilst his previous roles primarily centred on production, part of the attraction of working with Accolade was the relational aspect of working with customers. Nick will support current customers and develop new business, and this role will blend in his production knowledge as he supports customers to take an idea from concept through to finished product.

It’s not all work for Nick – it’s also golf. A keen sportsman in his younger years, Nick has recently discovered the lure of the links and now any spare weekend will see him perfecting his putt and developing his swing.

Tomorrow is the official holiday of Matariki, and our hard-working Accolade team will be taking the days off to spend time with their friends, family and whānau.

Matariki is a celebration that is unique to Aotearoa New Zealand. In te ao Māori, the rising of the Matariki stars marked the end of the harvest and working season, and a time for rest, gathering together and preparation – a time we use still to remember and honour the past, celebrate the present and anticipate and prepare for the months ahead.

It was a cold night in Ōtautahi last Friday, but it worth braving the cold to attend the celebration of New Zealand’s print industry at PrintNZ’s Pride in Print Awards.

Our very own Kapareira Hannon (Kapa) was a finalist in the Apprentice of the Year section for his work in Reelfed Printing, and Kapa’s father was there to share the night with him. B&F Group team members were also on hand to support Kapa.

Although Kapa didn’t take home the award (congratulations to Travers Dobson of Leading Label, Christchurch), we are immensely proud to see him, and his dedication to his profession, acknowledged in this way. The Accolade team are very proud of you, Kapa.

Our sincere congratulations to everyone who was a finalist on Friday.

Tomorrow night is the annual Pride in Print Awards and we have our fingers crossed for our apprentice, Kapareira Hannon, who is a finalist for Apprentice of the Year.

There are four others in the category with Kapa (Kapareira) - Rebecca Tipene of Visy Rigid Packaging, Auckland; Travers Dobson of Leading Label, Christchurch; Kai Devereux of Pakworld Christchurch; and Don Moonjely of Opal Packaging, Christchurch. We know each one is a well-deserved finalist and a proud advocate of the printing industry, but of course we are backing you all the way, Kapa!

Pride in Print showcases and celebrates excellence in New Zealand printing across a range of categories, and our printing sibling, B&F, is once again a sponsor.

Good luck to the finalists in all categories, and especially our apprentices - we’ll be at Te Pae in Ōtautahi to cheer you all on.

Today we want to give a shoutout to Kapareira Hannon, who works for us and who is a finalist for Apprentice of the Year at next Friday night’s annual in Print Awards.

Kapa (Kapareira) was chosen as one of the Top 5 Apprentices of the Year at the recent Printing Industry Training Graduation. The Top 5 award recognises excellence and creativity in print, and reflects Kapa's talent and the hard work he has put into his apprenticeship.

Kapareira told NZ that his apprenticeship gave him “a foundation to stand on which opens a world of opportunities in the industry. The most rewarding aspect about my work is being a part of a process that takes conceptual art and turns it into a physical product that you can touch, feel and appreciate.”

We are all proud of Kapa, and we’ll be crossing our fingers for you next Friday.

We recently moved into our new home in Takanini with our B&F Group sister company, B&F Papers. Twice the machinery meant twice the power needs, and in line with our shared commitment to environmental responsibility B&F Group decided to explore solar.

Cameron Dick from Vital Energy worked with us all on a comprehensive solution. A 78kw solar battery enables us to store electricity pulled through on cheaper overnight rates and ensures that, in an outage, neither B&F nor Accolade will be caught without power.

Cameron suggested installing solar panels too (140kw capacity), drawing in more power from the sun (40% of our total site power is from solar); we also have the option to add more panels and capacity in the future.

This new solar hybrid system has no downsides – it makes both economic and environmental sense, being more affordable and more sustainable than electricity.

The future, as they say, is bright. 🌞
