Who has used glitter jars as a fun activity to teach breathing for self-regulation?

👦Here is an example of emotion coaching for self-regulation with a 2 1/2 year old. Anyone can do this at work or at home with their children. I know there are many adults out there who benefit from intentionally practising deep breathing too.

😮‍💨Taking breaths while watching glitter fall to the bottom of the jar. Over time this little one was able to slow his breaths down and breathing like this became a real self regulation strategy for him

I was discussing EQ development and embedding practises into early childhood services with a service Manager today. I thought I would share one small example of how to use emotion cards to support the development of Emotional Self Awareness [EQ Competency #1] and how I do it at home.

This afternoon, master 6 accidently got his finger with a staple while doing art and craft. I had the 'Bear Cards' out so I said "ouch! I wonder which bear you are right now?" He found a 'crying/hurt' bear, told me he was "hurt but shaking it off", shook his arms and legs then happily went off to play again. This was very fast self-regulation for him. Master 5, joined in and found the bear pictured below. I asked what he was feeling, he said "I feel sad and worried cos [my brother] is hurt".

By using 'language' to describe their feelings, it was opening up the pathway to the part of the brain that is responsible for impulse control and logical thinking, therefore calming the emotional brain.

The boys are doing well with emotion recognition but there is always plenty more to learn. Remember, there are over 2000 'emotion' words in the English language!!!

Hi everyone, I would love to support more educators out there, in NZ and Australia. Please share this page with your colleagues so we can get a good discussion going about Emotional Intelligence for Educators.

**Emotionally Intelligent Educators develop Emotionally Intelligent Children**

As a parent myself, knowing my children are in the care of Educators who are developing and displaying these competencies is a big selling point for a service.

Conflict happens in many areas of our lives and can be something that we learn to approach with a sense of confidence or personal power [EQ competency]. Conflict at work will happen at some point and when we are feeling tired or are 'gliding' it can be more challenging to manage. Try to come back to you+me vs the problem - "we disagree right now, how can we solve this in line with our common values, goal or big picture?"

I have been speaking with Educators and service managers this month and many are still feeling the impacts of covid and disrupted staffing. Tired. Overwhelmed. Stressed.

👍Professional development is so important during times like this as it helps to give hope, instils a little energy and motivation and may just be the 'thing' that gets the team or an individual through.

😌Good workplace wellness investment increases productivity and is good for business. Coaching is a wonderful way to tailor wellness and workplace skill development for your service. Either 1:1 coaching for 1 hour or a team session.

"Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organisational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results" - Andrew Carnegie

🙋‍♀️🙋Teamwork and collaboration is one of the 26 competencies of social and emotional intelligence. Teamwork is complex and we do need to work on this skill as individuals as well as in teams to become highly competent team players and to benefit from the results of a high functioning team.

❓🕵Reflective question: Do you seek out opportunities to work with others and take a genuine interest in learning more about what they are working on and how you can support them?

Did you know that teachers [Educators] are rated number 4 in the top 10 professions most at risk of burnout!? This tells us that prioritising self-care and developing our EQ [competencies include stress management and emotional and behavioural self-awareness] is especially important for the Education industry. Are you gliding at the moment?

If you are gliding, you might notice...
🕵your home, work space or office is messier than usual
🕵pot plants that you normally care well for are dying
🕵things you normally find easy or are good at are harder for some reason
🕵you are more easily frustrated or annoyed by others behaviour [children and colleagues]

Do you relate to anything in this post? It is time for you to take a decent break. The longer you glide for, the longer it takes you to recover.
