“I just wish Gen Z knew that if they do the job, the title will come. Don’t wait for the title before you do the job.”

One of the business I am working with shared this insight with me in our kick off meeting for our 8 week “Young Talent Optimisation” assessment.

I can take this insight and share it with the Gen Z I work with and whether they buy into it or not, knowing employer expectations can shape their conversations and approach in such a positive way.

We are facing one of the biggest generational divides in history - initiative and expectations are definitely key drivers in the divide. I am really excited to be bridging the generational gap both in the schools I am working with, and the businesses I am supporting too.

Question for you: what is one thing you wish Gen Z employees understood?

7th Paradox - High Standards & Loving Grace
This paradox is one of the most misunderstood, and most important, for leaders working with Generation Z (aged 13–27).

Gen Z do not thrive in environments where perfection is demanded but support is absent. They have grown up in a world of constant comparison, online judgement, and public failure. The average young person of today has the same level of anxiety as a psychiatric patient in the 1950s. When leadership adds fear on top of that, performance drops and confidence collapses.

At the same time, Gen Z want to be stretched. They want to grow. They want to know their work matters.

This is where great leadership lives.

Good leaders do not lower the bar, but they do not weaponize it either.

High standards without grace create anxiety.
Grace without standards creates complacency.

Generation Z need both.

They need leaders who say, “I believe you are capable of excellence”. They need accountability that feels like coaching, not criticism. They need feedback that builds skill, not shame.

The fastest way to lose a young employee is to make mistakes feel unsafe. When failure is punished instead of processed, people stop taking initiative and in this space is where we are starting to see disengagement and 'quiet quitting'.

But when high expectations are paired with genuine care, something powerful happens.

Confidence grows.
Resilience develops.
Ownership increases.

You start to attract, engage and retain your Gen Z workers.

Generation Z stay where they feel challenged and supported at the same time.

The question for leaders is this:
Do your standards inspire growth, or do they create fear?

Because the leaders who win with Generation Z are not soft.
They are strong and safe.

For a business like mine - this is not a small decision.

My business is small (at the moment 😉) and start up, all my funds are managed carefully and very thoughtfully placed. To spend $260 on an event like this might be a small decision for some business… to me, it’s an investment. With prayer behind it paying off. I am sure it will. I am a sponge at these events and I am excited to learn everything it has to offer. With the right influence from Josh Turner, Michelle Clarke and Basie Pikimaui … of course I had to take the leap of faith.

Excited for event !

This is what it is all about!

Feeling very inspired today after I met with the manager of Instep from Priority One and we got excited about our passion for our mahi in supporting youth into employment. Then spoke about how Growth Hungry could support Instep and vice versa. We discussed relevant connections and bounced ideas off each other.

I then had the pleasure of meeting with the president of Lex Wahine which is a woman in law club at the University of Waikato. We spoke about the logistics of getting growth hungry to work with the Club and how again, we can support each other moving forward.

Such a great day!

Before: wrong structure (wouldn’t get through ATS), low visual appeal, irrelevant info taking up space, no professional foundation.

After: It speaks for itself 💼
