A room full of Gresson Dorman & Co. solicitors and colleagues was never going to let us get away with a lightweight conversation! 😄

We had a brilliant morning with the team last week, putting the Communication Compass through its paces.

Communication Compass is a practical team session that explores how different communication styles shape the way people share information, make decisions, respond to challenge and work together.

The framework is simple, but the session is never one-size-fits-all. We customise the questions, situations and activities around the team, their work and the conversations they actually need to have. For Gresson Dorman & Co., that meant realistic scenarios, sharp questions, assumptions challenged, robust debate and plenty of laughter.

The best teams are not made up of people who all think or communicate alike. The advantage comes from understanding those differences and knowing how to use them well.

Thanks to the Gresson Dorman & Co. team for getting stuck in. You were an absolute pleasure to work with.

A slightly different job for Beth over the weekend… 😂

She swapped business consulting for the runway at Hospice South Canterbury’s Bubbles & Banter fundraiser.

Now, modelling probably isn’t going to be her next career move. But she was more than happy to give it a go for a good cause!

It was a great afternoon supporting Hospice South Canterbury and the amazing work they do in our local community.

Always good to get behind local organisations doing good things. 68 Orbell St Hospice Shop Timaru 🧡

Every business has those little admin jobs that keep coming around - that rely on someone remembering to do them.

Following up a form.
Sending the same email.
Reminding someone an inspection is due.
Copying information from one place to another.

None of these are huge problems on their own but add them all up, week after week and they take a surprising amount of time.

Sometimes the answer is better software. Sometimes it's a simple digital form, dashboard or automation. Sometimes it's just fixing the process you already have.

That's the kind of digital work we're doing more of at Onsite Insight - finding practical ways to take unnecessary admin out of the day-to-day.

Simple systems. Less chasing. Better visibility.

Meet Beth Park, Director of Onsite Insight.

Beth has spent more than 25 years working in and around businesses - leading teams, improving processes, delivering projects and helping people perform at their best.

Her career started in brewing with DB Breweries and Heineken, where a background in food technology and process engineering led to work across production, lean systems, quality, training and health and safety.

Somewhere along the way, she realised she enjoyed fixing messy businesses even more than she enjoyed b**r!

These days, Beth spends much of her time alongside business owners and their teams - working through strategy, leadership, communication, conflict and the everyday challenges that can get in the way of a business working well.

She's at her best when things feel a bit tangled.

Get to the bottom of what's really going on. Make it simpler. Get the right people involved. Then get on with fixing it.

Outside of work, Beth enjoys time with family - and is one of those rare people who genuinely enjoys getting up early for a run.

When you're busy running the business, it can be hard to find the time to actually think about the business.

Customers need you. Staff need you. Decisions need to be made. There's always something that needs attention.

Before you know it, you're spending most of your time reacting to what's in front of you rather than thinking about what's next.

Sometimes the most valuable thing a business owner can do is step out of the day-to-day and look at the bigger picture.

Where are we going?
What's getting in the way?'
What needs to change to get us there?

A good business shouldn't just keep you busy. It should be taking you somewhere.

Meet Michelle Ackroyd, our Digital Solutions Specialist.

Michelle's working life has been anything but conventional.

From laboratory and manufacturing environments, to office management, e-commerce, and running her own small business, she's worn a lot of hats over the years!

Looking back, there's been one constant.

She's always been curious about how things work... and how they could work better.

Whether that's replacing paperwork with digital forms, building custom business apps, connecting systems together or exploring where AI can genuinely save time, Michelle loves turning ideas into practical solutions that make everyday business a little easier.

As she puts it:

"If you've ever thought, 'There has to be a better way to do this,' I'd probably agree."

Outside of work, you'll usually find Michelle spending time with family, exploring somewhere new with Betty (her very enthusiastic Miniature American Shepherd), or planning the next travel adventure.

One idea from a leadership workshop recently...

People don't just listen to your words. They take their emotional cue from you as well.

When leaders become rushed, defensive or reactive - that spreads.

When leaders stay calm, clear and grounded - that spreads too.

Before you try to regulate everyone else...

Regulate yourself first.

Your team often mirror your emotional state long before they follow your instructions.

I spent some time recently with Addison Mincham from Simpro, looking at Simpro Lightning and the latest AI developments.

One thing the conversation reinforced for me is that AI delivers the biggest gains when the foundations are already in place.

If your job costing is wrong, your inventory isn't up to date, your workflows are inconsistent, and nobody trusts the reports...

AI won't solve those problems on its own.

Get the fundamentals right first.

As a Simpro Partner, we help businesses implement Simpro properly, optimise existing systems and build processes that people actually use.

Then AI becomes an accelerator, not a band-aid.

That's the part I'm most excited about.

Looking forward to seeing where this technology goes over the next few years.
