🚨 Big changes are coming to NZ’s building consent rules 🏗️
Currently, all small standalone dwellings still require a building consent – but that’s about to change.
The Government is working on new legislation that will allow certain small standalone dwellings to be built without a building consent. This will be introduced as a new ‘building consent exemption’, and it’s expected to come into force by early 2026.
This is a significant step that could: ✅ Reduce red tape
✅ Lower costs
✅ Speed up delivery of much-needed housing
It’s a space worth watching closely – particularly for developers, builders, designers, and anyone in the housing sector.
Keen to see how this plays out and what types of dwellings will qualify for exemption.
