Try this simple energy experiment

You do not need a complicated system to understand your natural rhythm.

You simply need to start paying attention.

For the next three working days, pause three or four times during the day and ask yourself:

How is my energy right now?

How clear is my thinking?

What type of work feels easiest?

What am I struggling to do?

Give your energy a quick score out of 10.

You may begin to notice a pattern.

Perhaps you are excellent at making decisions early in the day.

Perhaps your creative energy arrives in the afternoon.

Perhaps you always experience a dip after lunch.

Perhaps you are trying to write, plan or problem-solve during your least effective window.

Once you can see your pattern, you can start designing your day around it.

Not perfectly.

Not rigidly.

But intentionally.

That is the real value of understanding your rhythm.

You stop fighting yourself and start using your energy more strategically.

Would you be willing to track your energy for three days and share with us what you discover?

Different rhythms can create better businesses

One of the biggest conversations after my Bx Networking presentation was about how morning people and night people work together.

This matters, especially when you have a team.

An early starter may be ready for a strategy meeting at 8.00am.

A later thinker may still be warming up.

The early starter may assume the other person is disengaged.

The later thinker may feel they are being judged before their brain has fully arrived.

Neither person is necessarily difficult.

They may simply have different natural rhythms.

Good teamwork does not mean everyone has to operate in exactly the same way.

It means understanding when different people are likely to think, communicate and perform at their best.

Of course, businesses still need structure, deadlines and shared working hours.

But even small amounts of flexibility can help.

Could meetings be scheduled slightly later?

Could focused work be protected?

Could people have more choice about when they complete tasks that require deep concentration?

When we stop expecting everyone to work exactly as we do, we often get better communication, stronger ideas and more consistent performance.

My challenge to you is to understand the people in your business, ask yourself the question, do they have similar rhythms, or completely different ones?

Stop giving your best energy to your inbox

Here is a question worth thinking about:

What receives the best part of your energy each day?
Is it your clients?

Your team?

Your inbox?

Social media?

Problems that need fixing?

Or the work that will actually move your business forward?

Many businesswomen begin their day by opening their email.

Within minutes, other people’s priorities have taken over.

By the time they get to their own strategy, marketing, planning or business development, their clearest thinking has already been used up.

This is not really a time-management problem.

It is an energy-management problem.

Your most valuable work deserves more than whatever energy is left over.

Try protecting even 30–60 minutes of your strongest energy window before opening the door to everybody else.

Use it to write, plan, create, think or make an important decision.

The inbox will still be there.

But your best energy will not be available all day.

What is one piece of important work that deserves your best energy this week?

Your afternoon dip is not a personal failure

That afternoon drop in energy is not proof that you are lazy, unproductive or losing motivation.

It is information.

Many businesswomen tell me they become frustrated when their concentration disappears partway through the day.

They stare at the screen.

They reread the same sentence.

They move between tasks without finishing anything.

So they push harder, grab another coffee and tell themselves they need to be more disciplined.

But your body and brain naturally move through periods of higher and lower energy.

A dip may be telling you that you need food, water, movement, fresh air, a change of task or a genuine break.

It may also be telling you that you are trying to do demanding work at the wrong time.

Instead of fighting every dip, start working with it.

Use lower-energy periods for routine tasks, filing, emails, invoicing or simple administration.

Protect your stronger periods for the work that requires creativity, focus and good judgement.

Your dip is not ruining your day.

It is part of your rhythm.

Are you really a morning person?

Are you a morning person, a night person, or somewhere in between?

This created a lot of discussion after my recent Bx networking presentation.

Some women said they are ready to take on the world at 6.00am.

Others said their best ideas arrive later in the day. I had one leader tell me that she is often still working at 1am.

Neither is right or wrong.

We all have different natural rhythms.

The challenge comes when we judge ourselves against someone else’s schedule.

You might see another businesswoman exercising, journalling and answering emails before you have even finished your first coffee.

That does not mean her way is better.

It means her rhythm may be different from yours.

Your business does not need you to copy somebody else’s routine.

It needs you to understand when you think clearly, make confident decisions and produce your best work.

Rather than asking, “What time should I start work?”

Try asking:

“When does my brain do its best work?”

That question can completely change how you plan your day.

I would love to know, pop you answers in the comments…Are you an early starter, a later thinker or somewhere in the middle?

Your energy was never designed to flatline

One thing really struck me after my recent Bx Networking presentation.

Many businesswomen are still planning their days as though their energy should remain at the same level from morning until night.

But that simply isn’t how we are designed.

Our energy naturally rises and falls throughout the day.

There are times when we feel clear, focused and confident.

And there are times when even answering a simple email feels harder than it should.

The problem is not that we lack motivation.

The problem is that we often expect the same level of performance from ourselves all day long.

When you run a business, it is easy to use your best energy responding to messages, sorting out problems and helping everyone else.

Then, when you finally get to the work that will grow your business, your energy has already gone.

Start noticing when you feel at your sharpest.

That is where your important thinking, planning, creating and decision-making should go.

You may not need more hours in your day.

You may simply need to use your strongest hours more intentionally.

I am curious, pop your answer in the comments….When do you feel most focused: morning, afternoon or evening?

Have you ever looked at your life or business and thought:
“Everything is going well… so why does it feel so heavy?”

From the outside, you may look successful, capable and completely in control.
But behind the scenes, your mind is constantly switched on.

You are answering questions, making decisions, fixing problems, supporting others and trying to stay ahead of everything that needs your attention.

By the end of the day, you have been incredibly busy… but the work that really needed your thinking, creativity and leadership may have been pushed aside again.

It is easy to believe the problem is time.
That you need a quieter week.
Fewer meetings.
Another hour in the day.

But I do not believe time is always the real issue.

Two people can have equally full calendars and similar responsibilities, yet one feels constantly stretched while the other feels calm, focused and in control.

The difference is often energy.

An hour when you are clear, rested and focused is very different from an hour when you are tired, distracted and making your tenth important decision of the day.

The answer is not to become less ambitious.
It is to stop treating your energy as though it is unlimited.
Because success should require effort.
It should not require you to carry everything personally.

What are you still carrying simply because you have always been capable of carrying

Feel like a ghost by 3pm?

You know that feeling?

You started the day with decent intentions.

Maybe even a little spark.

You had your list.
You had your coffee.
You had the “right, let’s do this” energy.

And then somehow, by 3pm, you feel like a faded version of yourself.

Not fully tired.
Not fully done.
Just… gone.

Like your body is at the desk, but your brain has quietly left the building.

I call this the 3pm ghost zone.

And no, it does not always happen because you worked too hard.

Sometimes it happens because your energy has been leaking all day in tiny ways you barely notice.

The message you answered even though it could have waited.
The decision you made for someone else because it was “quicker.”
The meeting that had no clear purpose.
The constant switching between tabs, tasks, apps, and people.
The emotional labour of holding everyone else’s urgency.

None of these things feel huge on their own.

But together?

They quietly drain the tank.

This is why so many high-achieving women get to mid-afternoon and think:

“What is wrong with me?”

Nothing is wrong with you.

You are not lazy.
You are not losing your edge.
You are not suddenly bad at business.

You may simply be spending your best energy in too many invisible places.

And that matters.

Because by the time you finally get to the work that needs your clarity, your brain is already full of open loops.

So here is the question I would ask you today:

Where is your energy leaking before 3pm?

Not your time.

Your energy.

Because time can look available on paper while your energy is already gone.

And that is the part most planners, calendars, and productivity hacks miss.

So before you push harder, add more caffeine, or blame yourself for fading…

Pause.

Look at the leaks.

That is where your energy starts coming back.

Do you hit the 3pm ghost zone too, or is it just me?

Stop driving your business with the handbrake on.

I hear this from businesswomen all the time:

“I just have too much to do.”

And yes, sometimes that is true.

There is a lot on the plate.

Clients.
Team questions.
Admin.
Decisions.
Family.
Messages.
Invoices.
Meetings.
The never-ending “quick things.”

But often, when we look a little closer, the problem is not just the amount of work.

It is where that work is sitting in the day.

One of my clients, who always seems to have it together, rang me this morning and just blurted out.

“I cannot keep up. It never ends.”

So we looked at her calendar.

And there it was.

Her best energy hours. the part of the day where she was naturally clearer, sharper, and more creative, were being swallowed by inbox clean-up, quick replies, other people’s fires, and tiny admin jobs.

Then later in the day, when she felt flat and foggy, she had scheduled the work that actually needed her best brain.

Strategy.
Planning.
Leadership decisions.
Big-picture thinking.

The work her business actually depended on.

That is not a discipline problem.

That is not a motivation problem.

That is not a “you need a prettier planner” problem.

That is a handbrake problem.

She was trying to drive a successful business while her calendar was fighting her energy.

And I see this everywhere.

Capable women.
Smart women.
Women who are absolutely the engine of their business.

But they are doing low-value work in their best hours and expecting brilliance from themselves when they are running on fumes.

No wonder everything feels harder.

When your most important work lands in your lowest-energy hours:

Decisions feel heavier.
Focus takes longer.
Small things feel irritating.
You second-guess yourself.
You end the day tired and still behind.

You do not need a new version of you.

You need a calendar that stops asking you to be your best self at your worst time of day.

Try this today:

Move one strategic task into the part of the day where you feel most alive.

Then notice what changes.

Are you driving your business with the handbrake on?

With Focus and Intention,
Heather
