Kia ora! What’s the most useful tool in the winemakers toolkit? The humble cellphone. From selecting the appropriate Spotify soundtrack for either filtering or plunging, to writing/dictating notes and lastly checking the insides of tanks for debris. Indispensable. Probably a good idea to get one that can handle occasional immersion and withstands the inevitable misplaced pocket drop. Dang it.

Hi All,

As some of you will know my husband and his mate have spent most of 2023 renovating a single bay Villa in Masterton. They have done a fantastic job and we have it on the market. So if you are thinking of moving into the awesome Wairarapa or you know of someone who is, then how about drawing their attention to this Trade Me advert. We are having a go at selling ourselves so any questions don't hesitate to ask.

This 1911 villa has been lovingly restored combining modern comforts with the character of yesteryear. Turn-of-the-century features have been sympathetically r...

John Stewart Dugdale has officially left the building. Laid to rest on Saturday 24th September, 2 years and 20 days, thanks to a pandemic, after a quick passing. Many thanks to my sisters for organising this. Am now in receipt of 10 kilos of family toanga. Let’s see what I can do.

Marvellous review of our 2019 Martinborough Pinot in the new livery. Cracked a bottle last night alongside a beautifully elegant The Elder 2015 ,a rambunctious Gigondas, and an expertly aged CO Riesling from Chard Farm. A little slow this morning.

Pinot Brothers Pinot Noir 2019, Martinborough

Darl ruby-black with good transparency, lighter on the rim. The nose is elegantly presented, with gentle aromas of black cherry and raspberry intertwined with hibiscus, dried herb and a hint of game. Medium-bodied, black cherry intermixed raspberry and a suggestion of prune; hibiscus unfolds with nutmeg, black pepper, dried thyme, mushroom and forest floor. The flavour has concentration, with lifted floral and red fruit details, lacy acidity support and lingers to a long, very fine, elegant finish. Supple tannins lightly adorn the mouthfeel in silk. This is a refined Pinot Noir with delicate flavours and graceful development on a silky, enticing palate. Match with roasted quail and lamb shabushabu over the next 5-8 years. Fermented with 10% whole bunches with wild yeasts to 13.5% alc, 20-21 days on skins, aged 12 months in seasoned French oak barrels. 19/20 pts (95 pts) Aug 2022 RRP $50

In celebration of a lovely day, I shall open a 2018 B Pinot Noir, check the colour, then prepare a well-marbled steak from a Rotorua homekil. Plus, read the late Keith Stewart’s charmingly pointed, but sunny examination of the NZ Wine industry. Link in bio to purchase.

Why not open a 2015 Pinot Noir? MiL asked the vintage: “It’s pretty smooth” Agree, Anne, time has made the palate become silky and with a merest hint of firmness. If you can read my hand written notes, please DM them to me, as sometimes I have no idea.

Subbed in for Tanya on the most delightful tasting with Joelle Thomson. A brisk 6 bottle journey through the Rhone, gorgeously wrapped up with a 1981 Aussie Port. What do these wines offer? Value. Plus elegant and grainy tannins, complex fruit and warm, inviting aromas. Bring me a charcuterie board! Joelle is a great guide, and I hugely enjoy learning a few new things ( in some cases re-learning things that had dropped off the edge).
