If your board recruitment strategy is mostly based on who-knows-who, or you're going into the whole process unaware of what you actually need, it might be time for a Skills Matrix.

Here are 3 signs your board needs one:
1. You're not sure what skills you currently have around the table
2. You're even less sure what you need next
3. Recruitment feels like a stab in the dark and hoping it works out well

We've just launched our refreshed Skills Matrix process - practical, visual, supportive, and built for real board conversations. Plus we only provide you with the support you want along the way.

AI won’t replace your company secretary, but it might just test your board’s governance integrity.

With AI tools increasingly used to draft board minutes, it's tempting to lean into efficiency. But the catch? The board’s judgment can’t be outsourced.

We’ve read the latest joint statement, 'Effective Board Minutes and the Use of AI' from Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Governance Institute of Australia, and our take is simple:
1. AI can support, but it should never lead.
2. Human oversight isn’t optional - it’s the foundation of integrity.
3. Draft minutes are just that. Drafts. The real value comes from the boardroom conversation, and that can’t be generated.

We’ll have more thoughts in an upcoming blog, but for now, a question - Would your board know when AI has gone too far?

Are you a Challenger? A Counsellor? Maybe a Change Agent?

Not all board Chairs lead the same way (and that’s 100% okay!). Great Chairs come in many styles, but understanding your default approach can be a powerful step toward becoming more effective in the role.

We’ve mapped eight common chairing styles, from the peacekeeping Consensus Builder to the sharp-witted Critic. Each brings strengths - and potential blind spots.

Boards often ask us, “How do we embed culture that lasts beyond a single leader or issue?”

Here’s our view: sustainable culture stems from consistent, intentional behaviours -especially in the boardroom.

It’s about how decisions are made, how disagreement is handled, how accountability is lived. The Pharmac Culture Review showed that culture isn’t abstract—it’s the daily reality of trust, safety, and purpose.

Good governance means checking in on your culture just as often as your strategy.

Want to explore how your board is shaping culture—intentionally or otherwise?

The recent Pharmac Workplace Culture Review is a wake-up call for boards across Aotearoa.

It highlights something we see often: when culture is treated as an operational issue rather than a governance priority, misalignment and mistrust creep in—and change becomes harder than it needs to be.

It’s easy to view culture as intangible, but the truth is: it should be as system-driven as finances or risk. As the review puts it, “systems are the means by which a business translates its policies and objectives into reality.” It should be measured, reviewed, and intentionally shaped by the board. That’s why it’s a key part of our Board Health Check and Culture Workshop offerings.

Culture isn’t a communications exercise. It’s a leadership responsibility.
Are you carving out space in your boardroom to reflect on culture?

We love hearing how our sessions land with boards:

"Good discussion on board succession planning and term length, along with training and development commitment to support a balanced and purposeful board. Thank you."

It’s feedback like this that reminds us why we do what we do.
Thanks to all the boards that have brought curiosity, courage, and commitment into the room this year.
