Community Pool for Warkworth & Districts

Community Pool for Warkworth & Districts A page to gain interest, support and action from locals who are keen to help get a pool facility in We need your help. WE WON'T GET IF WE DON'T ASK!!

There are no public swimming facilities in the Warkworth district. For a population nearing 17,000 this area is desperately underresourced. Having become part of the Auckland super city, our needs are being pushed to one side as our rates go towards projects where the population concentration is greater. We need to look at alternative options to building community recreation facilities, such as a

community pool - something our people have overwhelmingly indicated a need for. Besides the obvious recreational aspect, there is a major health benefit to everyone in the community, from babies to the elderly, no matter what their physical abilities. Many people in the community need access to a pool, be it for Learn-to-Swim, gentle aerobic exercise for the elderly, hydrotherapy or recovery from injury/operation; these require 30c+, as well as a range of pool depths. The elderly need at the very least a stair entry to a pool, and a warm atmosphere. They want to exercise too, but need low impact opportunities. Babies and the disabled require 30c+ temperatures. WE NEED A WELL-DESIGNED FACILITY THAT ENCOURAGES FREQUENT PATRONISATION, WITH USEFUL REVENUE, WHICH WILL ENHANCE COMMUNITY HEALTH & WELL-BEING. Aquatic centres, associated cafeteria and fitness centre together with 7 day operation are commonly a community recreation hub, bringing in useful revenue from residents and tourists alike. With huge community support for project, there is opportunity to take advantage of local contributions by contractors for all services eg engineering, earthworks & contractors. Supply & Demand, Repeat visits high – conservatively estimated @ 110,000pa at current population, with “honeymoon period “ 125,000+ in first year of operation, probably higher with innovative and well-run programs and good management.

Hope we get some!

An additional $120 million will boost sport and recreation in the Auckland region after it was designated in the Auckland Council Long Term Plan (LTP). The LTP allocates funding for the next 10 years and this amount will help to address an estimated $500 million capital shortfall in this sector. Sport and recreation delivers around $1.9 billion into the Auckland economy each year and provides more than 25,000 jobs. The LTP will come into effect on July 1.

We are still pushing for Council to negotiate a private/public partnership. If this is not possible then we will continue to advocate for a public pool to provide access to water activities for all of our community.
Keep an eye out for when we do a 'call to action' we will need your support!

Northern Arena is confident it will be in a position to start work on a Leisure Centre in Warkworth around 2021. http://www.localmatters.co.nz/news/16288-warkworth-pool-hinges-on-land-purchase.html

OPINIONS REQUIRED!!!!!
See below for a link to an article in the Mahu Matters re Northern Arena confirm swim pool plan.

There is a public consultation next month and we are seeking community opinion of this possible development. PLEASE include the hashtag in your posts or shares so we can track all feedback.

Our concern is Northern Arena is a membership based facility. There are no facilities for public access. If successful does this mean that the Council will no longer prioritise Warkworth and Districts as needing a public aquatic facility?

Managing Director Matthew Saunders says ’I doubt we will get any financial contribution from council. We envisage operating and maintain the facility ourselves.’
Do we as a community want Council to push for a joint partnership with North Arena to provide some of these facilities? Or do we want a Council to provide our district with a separate public facility?
Consider that Northern Arena currently charge $18 per swim lesson or $16.00 for an aqua aerobics class (council facility classes are just $5.85).

Our campaign which represents the community voice advocates that Council invest in a PUBLIC access swimming pool …. one that provides swim lessons, play areas, splash pads for littlies, public lane swimming, access to classes (such as Aqua Aerobics) and facilities for water based sports such as our Kowhai Swim Club, Underwater Hockey Teams etc.

- Do you believe that a privately run, membership access only pool as our only aquatic facility in Warkworth is sufficient? (Acknowledging Mahu School Pool public lane swimming hours)

- Do you want council to push for a joint partnership with a private enterprise to provide public facilities or access?

- Do we want council to provide a public aquatic facility regardless of private developments.

We appreciated your comments and feedback.

You've probably heard the rumours going around about the new pool for Warkworth. Are you going to sit back and wait to see what happens? Or would you like a say in the process?
Rodney ratepayers are subsidising free entry to Council pools across Auckland, yet we don't have access to them. For 10 years Warkworth has been asking for a fair deal, and Council has recognised the need. Now they want to know how we wish to fund such a facility. There are several ways we can do this - we just need to find the right fit for our community. We also need to ensure that ALL our citizens have access to an aquatic facility, not just for swimming lessons, but for lap swimming, gentle aqua exercise and rehabilitation. These are the things we need to ask Council to provide, as a commercial operator can't make money out of casual pool use, or low cost exercise classes.
Go on, take 5 minutes to "Have Your Say" before Friday 30th June (like NOW would be good!) and tell Council what you think. http://engage.ubiquity.co.nz/surveys/QFAOn8f_wki8oQjUk8cmkQ
