We all know how it goes...

“They should know I need that by Friday.”
“They should know they’re supposed to update me.”
“They should know that’s part of their role.”
“They should know I wasn’t happy with how that went.”
“They should know they need to ask before doing that.”

But here’s the thing… Do they actually know? 🤔

Or have we communicated something once, vaguely mentioned it in a meeting six months ago, assumed it was obvious, or never actually said it out loud?...

A lot of workplace tension starts in the gap between what one person assumes and what another person understands.

Then the frustration builds. The manager thinks, Why am I having to explain this again?

The employee thinks, Nobody told me that?

And suddenly you’ve got two frustrated people having completely different experiences of the same situation.

Clear expectations don’t mean micromanaging people.

They mean making sure people know what they’re responsible for, what good looks like, when something needs to happen, and what they can expect from you in return.

And when something isn’t working? Communicate it. Kindly. Clearly. Early.

Because “they should know” isn’t really a communication strategy!

Need help with this? We would love to chat! 😊

It happens all the time. Someone is capable, reliable and knows the business inside out. So naturally, they’re promoted into a leadership role.

And then suddenly their job isn’t just about being good at what they do.

It’s giving feedback. Having awkward conversations. Delegating. Managing different personalities. Setting expectations. Supporting someone who’s struggling.

Those are completely different skills and people need the opportunity to learn them.

Promoting someone is the first step. Supporting them to become a confident leader is what comes next.

That’s where leadership coaching can make a huge difference. We at BloomHQ specalise in Leadership & Career Coaching.

Maybe you’re stepping into leadership for the first time. Maybe you’ve been leading for years and want to develop your own style. Or maybe you’re at a point in your career where you’re ready to work out what comes next.

Coaching gives you dedicated time to focus on you.

To talk through ideas, unpack challenges, build confidence, recognise your strengths and get clearer on the direction you want to take.

There’s no set path you’re expected to follow and no perfect version of a leader you need to become.

It’s about understanding what works for you, what matters to you, and how you want to show up.

Ready to invest some time in your own growth? Let’s have a chat.

ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini... it’s pretty normal now.

Writing emails. Summarising meetings. Brainstorming ideas. Helping with reports. Maybe even doing bits of client work.

And that’s not necessarily a bad thing. But have you actually talked about where the ethical line is?

What information shouldn’t be put into AI? What needs to be checked by a real person? Is everyone clear on what’s okay to use it for?

You probably don’t need a massive AI policy gathering dust somewhere... But a few clear business ground rules? Absolutely!

Might be time for the conversation and we're here to help you and your organisation hold that space.

We genuinely love seeing businesses succeed!

And as your business grows, the people side of things tends to grow with it.

More people. More decisions. More conversations. More responsibility. That’s where we come in.

We work alongside business owners and leaders to help you make the right calls, put the right structures in place, and build a team that actually supports where your business is heading.

Sometimes that means sorting out something that’s become a bit messy.

Sometimes it’s helping you navigate a tricky people decision.

And sometimes it’s simply having an experienced HR person in your corner to say, “Yep, you’re on the right track."

Because good HR isn’t just about policies, paperwork and ticking boxes.

It’s about creating a business where your people can do their best work and your business can keep moving forward.

What does wellbeing actually mean to your team? 🤔

It’s one of those words we use a lot at work, but when was the last time you actually sat down as a team and talked about it?

Our Shared Wellbeing workshop uses The Wellbeing Deck, created by Tamara Buckland, to get those conversations going.

It’s a chance to explore what wellbeing looks like for each person, challenge some of the weird taboos we still have around it, and talk about what genuinely helps.

You’ll come away with a better understanding of each other, some practical ideas you can actually use, and hopefully a stronger connection as a team.

Because wellbeing isn't going to look the same for everyone and that's okay.

Want to explore wellbeing with your team? Let's chat!

A new contractor “gateway test” came into effect in New Zealand on 21 February 2026.

And no,you can’t just pop the word contractor into an agreement and call it sorted.

To pass the gateway test, the contractor needs to meet all the criteria. This includes being allowed to work for other people, choosing when they work or being able to subcontract the work, and turning down additional work without losing the arrangement.

They also need a written agreement confirming their contractor status and a reasonable opportunity to seek independent advice before signing it.

If they don’t meet every part of the test, that doesn’t automatically make them an employee. But it does mean the working relationship needs to be assessed using the existing common law test.

Because what happens in practice matters.

If your “contractor” works set hours, needs permission to take time off, can’t work for anyone else and is managed like an employee…it might be time to take another look.

Getting this wrong can create issues around holiday pay, sick leave, minimum wage, KiwiSaver and other employee entitlements.

So, when was the last time you reviewed your contractor agreements and checked whether they reflect how the relationship actually works?

If the answer is “We haven’t” or “I’m not completely sure,” BloomHQ can help you untangle it!

The Holidays Act is changing. Do you actually know what that means for your business? 👀

The new Employment Leave Act has officially passed and will eventually replace the Holidays Act.

But before you start panicking about payroll, leave entitlements and another round of employment law changes... the new rules don't kick in until August 2028.

So no, you don't need to overhaul everything tomorrow.

But you DO need to understand what's changing, what it could mean for your people, and what your business will eventually need to do differently.

And we get it. You're running a business. You probably don't have hours to spend reading legislation and trying to work out which bits actually apply to you.

That's where having good HR support makes life a whole lot easier.

At BloomHQ, we help founders and SME owners cut through the HR noise, understand their obligations and turn employment law changes into practical actions for their business.

No HR waffle. Just super clear, practical advice about what you actually need to know.

Confused about the new Employment Leave Act or other employment law changes?

It starts innocently enough...You need someone you trust. Your mate needs a job. They know you. You know them. Sweet. What could possibly go wrong?

Unfortunately, quite a lot, actually!

Hiring friends can work brilliantly, but the moment your mate becomes your employee, the relationship changes.

Suddenly you may need to talk around topics like: What their role actually is,
What you expect from them, Who makes the final call, What happens when they're not performing or how you would handle disagreements.

And yes… an actual employment agreement The biggest mistake isn't hiring someone you know. It's assuming that because you're mates, you don't need the same clarity you'd have with any other employee.

Because "you know what I mean, mate" isn't a performance management strategy.

Set the expectations early. Put the right foundations in place. And give both the friendship and the working relationship a fighting chance!

Growing your team and wondering how to get the people side right? That's exactly the kind of thing we help NZ founders and SMEs navigate 💚
