LEADER, EXPERIENCED, INNOVATIVE PROGRAM DEVELOPER
Barry has worked in mental health promotion and su***de prevention for 30 years at the local, national and international levels. His extensive experience includes sitting on State and Commonwealth government advisory committees; designing, implementing and evaluating su***de prevention programmes; writing su***de prevention guidelines, training packages and community resources; providing technical advice to community based and national mental wellbeing and su***de prevention programmes.
INSPIRATIONAL SPEAKER AND TRAINER
A sought after presenter and trainer on his specialist subject areas of mental wellbeing, su***de prevention, loss and grief, spirituality and men’s well-being. He has a particular interest in su***de and depression in men as well as sexuality related su***de. Participants also consistently comment on his breadth and depth of understanding of su***de prevention theory and practice which evokes a strong sense of confidence that the content being delivered is theoretically sound and based on good evidence and practice.
CRITICAL ANALYSIS GROUNDED IN LIVED EXPERIENCE
Brings a sociological analysis and a public health framework to his work as well as his lived experience of depression and suicidality. He has also been bereaved by su***de of close friends and extended family. He has a keen interest in the social and cultural determinants of health and well-being and is an advocate for evidence based practice; the use of outcomes based logic in both programme development and evaluation measures for complex social health programmes.
RECOGNISED FOR HIS WORK
In 2016 he was recipient of the NSW Mental Health Commissioner's Community Champion Award which recognises individuals or grassroots organisations who have made an outstanding contribution to mental health and wellbeing in their communities.When, he was awarded a Winston Church Fellowship in 1990 to study youth su***de in UK and US, he was at the time, the youngest New Zealander to receive the Fellowship.

Key Achievements
Re-orientation of Mental Health Promotion Team to a wellbeing framework and launch of South Western Sydney Wellbeing Collaboration and Five Ways to Wellbeing South Western Sydney initiative.
Development of training materials and roll out of national training programme for health, social service, volunteer sectors and LGBTI communities on LGBTI su***de and mental health.
Organised the first men’s only national conference on men, su***de and depression.
Development of the Wairarapa district – wide Su***de Prevention Action Plan.
Reviewed and updated the New Zealand guidelines for schools on the prevention, recognition and management of young people at risk of su***de.
Undertook a quantitative and qualitative review of national mortality datasets and coroners’ files to identify emerging trends in the locations and methods of su***de in New Zealand.
Established a regional su***de postvention response service across the Wellington region.
Established and managed a su***de prevention project to increase the capacity and capability of services in Western Sydney to respond to young people with Dual Diagnosis.
Provided professional leadership at a national level and management at a state level of a programme for the prevention of su***de in the sons and daughters of Vietnam Veterans.
Organised in March 1997 a national workshop on Gay and Le***an Youth Su***de in Sydney, the first to be held in Australia.
Co-wrote Educating for Life: National Guidelines for Effective Su***de Prevention Programs in Secondary Schools as part of the Mindmatters Resource Package.
Contributed to the governance and oversight of the first Youth Su***de Prevention Plan as part of the Commonwealth Youth Su***de Prevention Advisory Group.
Provided technical input to the development of the Queensland Government Youth Su***de Prevention Strategy.
Provided comprehensive training programme for the Queensland Young People at Risk: Access, Prevention and Action’ Programme including the writing of a state-wide resource manual on self-harming and suicidal behaviour in young people – Life Focus.
Convened the accreditation body for Loss and Grief practitioners in Victoria.
Scoped, wrote and delivered an industry-wide competency based Certificate in Bereavement Studies for the Australian funeral industry.
Established and managed the Victorian Youth Su***de Prevention Project.
Provided technical input and advisory services to Commonwealth countries for the development of national youth health strategies.
Established and managed the first national response to youth su***de prevention in New Zealand which eventually culminated in the development of a Māori specific component (Kia Piki te Ora O Ngā Taitamariki) of the strategy “In our Hands” focusing specifically on Māori su***de prevention developed by Dr Keri Lawson-Te Aho supported by Te Puni Kōkiri funded Māori advisory group.
Founding member of the New Zealand Association for Adolescent Health and National Association for Loss and Grief in New Zealand.
Advocated for and assisted in the establishment of support groups for le***an and gay youth in New Zealand, leading the development of guidelines for the operation of such groups and organized the first national le***an and youth conference.
Contributed to the development of the First New Zealand AIDS Strategy as a member of the National Council on AIDS.
Established HIV/AIDS support and education and prevention programmes in the early days of HIV/AIDS epidemic across the Wellington region and participated in the establishment of the New Zealand AIDS Foundation
