At Cutting Edge Consultancy, I talk a lot about focus, prioritising, and keeping things simple so small businesses can grow sustainably. But here’s the honest truth – even those of us who teach this stuff need to be reminded of it from time to time.

Recently, I found myself saying "yes" to too many things. Yes to helping out. Yes to jumping in. Yes to new projects, meetings, admin… the list kept growing. Before I knew it, I was spread thin. Not ineffective, but definitely not at my best.

It’s a trap many of us fall into – especially in small business. We say “yes” because we care. We want to help. We want to grow. But what we often forget is that every “yes” is a trade-off. It’s energy, time, and focus taken away from the things that truly matter.

So this is a reminder – for you and for me – about the power of saying "no".

Saying “no” isn’t negative. It’s not selfish. In fact, it's one of the strongest leadership tools you can use. When you say “no” to something that doesn’t align with your goals or values, you’re actually saying “yes” to what matters:
✔ your health
✔ your team
✔ your long-term goals
✔ your family
✔ your sanity

We can’t do it all. And we don’t have to. The businesses I coach that make the most progress are the ones that focus. They cut out the noise. They stick to the plan. They say “no” when it’s not a good fit.

So, what do you need to say “no” to this week?
What’s dragging your energy away from the core of your business?

Take it from someone who needed a reminder – you’ll be better for it.

Running a small business in New Zealand comes with plenty of challenges. Whether you're a tradie, a retailer, or a consultant, unexpected risks can disrupt your operations and hit your bottom line. That’s why risk management isn’t just for big corporations—it’s essential for every small business owner.

What is Risk Management?

Risk management is the process of identifying, assessing, and controlling threats to your business. These risks could come from various sources, such as financial uncertainty, health and safety incidents, cyber threats, or supply chain disruptions. The goal is to reduce the impact of these risks so your business can operate smoothly and grow confidently.

Steps to Implement Risk Management in Your Business

A solid risk management plan doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s how to get started:

1. Identify Risks

List all the potential risks that could impact your business. Think about internal risks (staffing, finance, compliance) and external risks (natural disasters, cyber threats, competition).

2. Assess the Impact

Not all risks are equal. Consider how likely each risk is and what the consequences would be. A simple risk matrix (low, medium, high) can help prioritise.

3. Develop a Response Plan

For each major risk, determine how you’ll manage it:
Avoid it – Change your approach to eliminate the risk.
Reduce it – Implement controls to lessen the impact (e.g., strong cybersecurity measures, staff training).
Transfer it – Use insurance or contracts to shift some of the risk elsewhere.
Accept it – If the risk is minor and the cost of mitigation is too high, you may choose to monitor it instead.

4. Implement Safeguards

Take practical steps to reduce risks. This could include:
Regular staff training on health and safety.
Keeping financial reserves for economic downturns.
Backing up business data and using strong cybersecurity tools.
Reviewing supplier agreements and having contingency plans.

5. Monitor & Update

Risk management isn’t a one-and-done process. Regularly review your risks, update your response plans, and ensure your team knows how to handle emerging threats.

Prequalification in Health and Safety – A Growing Requirement

Health and Safety prequalification is becoming increasingly important, particularly as more government agencies and councils require businesses to be prequalified before awarding contracts. If your business works in construction, trades, or other high-risk industries, prequalification is no longer optional—it’s a must-have.

What is Prequalification?
Prequalification is a process that assesses a business’s health and safety systems to ensure they meet industry standards and legal requirements. It provides clients—particularly large organisations, councils, and government agencies—with confidence that your business operates safely and is compliant with WorkSafe regulations and best practices.

Common prequalification schemes in New Zealand include:
- Totika – The national Health and Safety prequalification framework.
- SiteWise– Used widely in construction and infrastructure.
- IMPAC Prequal– Recognised across multiple industries.

Why is Prequalification Important?
Many businesses, particularly in construction and contracting, are finding that prequalification is a barrier to entry when bidding for government or council contracts. Increasingly, councils and government departments are refusing to engage with businesses that are not prequalified.

Beyond compliance, prequalification provides real benefits:
- Competitive Advantage – Businesses that are prequalified can access more opportunities.
- Credibility & Trust– Clients see your business as professional and safety-conscious.
- Reduced Risk– Ensures your systems align with best practices, reducing workplace incidents and liabilities.

How to Get Prequalified:
1. Assess Your Current Systems – Review your health and safety policies, procedures, and documentation.
2. Choose a Prequalification Scheme – Identify the best fit for your industry and target clients.
3. Submit Required Documentation – This includes risk assessments, policies, training records, and incident reports.
4. Undergo the Audit Process– Some schemes require an external audit of your systems.
5. Maintain Compliance – Prequalification is not a one-time event; regular updates and renewals are required.

Get Ready Now
With government and council contracts becoming more dependent on prequalification, now is the time to get your business ready.

Planning for a Profitable 2025: 4 things to think about. (only one to do!)

As the calendar turns to 2025, small business owners around New Zealand are taking stock of their goals and strategies for the year ahead. For many, it’s a time of reflection, recalibration, and re-commitment to growth.

At Cutting Edge Consultancy, we understand that this planning phase is critical to setting yourself up for success. If you’re in a similar position, here are four key areas to focus on as you look towards the future:

1. People
Your team is your greatest asset. Now is the perfect time to:
- Assess your current staffing needs and future requirements.
- Review performance and development plans.
- Consider leadership training or team-building initiatives to enhance productivity and morale.

Strong teams drive strong businesses, so investing in your people will always pay dividends.

2. Plans
A clear roadmap for 2025 is essential. Ask yourself:
- What are your business’s top priorities this year?
- Are your goals realistic, measurable, and aligned with your long-term vision?
- Have you accounted for potential risks or industry changes?

A solid plan ensures you stay on track and adapt as needed.

3. Profit
Profitability is the lifeblood of your business. Take the time to:
- Analyse your financial performance from 2024.
- Identify opportunities to cut costs or increase efficiency.
- Set clear profit targets and monitor cash flow closely.

Understanding your numbers is critical for making informed decisions.

4. Process
Efficient processes save time and money. Consider:
- Streamlining your operations or adopting new tools and technology.
- Reviewing your health and safety practices to ensure compliance.
- Automating repetitive tasks to free up time for growth-focused activities.

Improved processes lead to smoother operations and happier clients.

Every business meeting or discussion should have a clear purpose and direction.

Whether it's to deliver a report, share critical information, or inspire action, the message must be precise and actionable.

Attendees should leave knowing exactly what steps to take next, or why the information is important to them, avoiding any confusion or thoughts of, "What the heck am I supposed to do now?"

Clarity and a solid call to action ensure time is well-spent and the meeting adds real value to the business.

Top-tip-time!
Work out the hourly rate and the lost time of the attendees.
Is the meeting worth the cost?
