I know it's a shocking thing to confess as someone who lives in Aotearoa but I am not a rugby fan 😆

However!

I had the best time at the Northland vs Tasman match last night.

I had no idea what was happening on the field apart from when they got the ball over the line and then it was a try, and kicked the ball over the posts and then it was a conversion, or a penalty.

But you know what? It doesn't matter!

The energy was fantastic. Being amongst people having a good time, families together, children rolling in mud and giggling and laughing was just the best.

It so reminded me of how special it is to be a part of a community.

Seeing a man shake the hand of another, while apologizing for asking him to sit down. "Sorry bro if I was rude"

Listening to the commentator encouraging us all to cheer out with a "Ok whānau let's go for it - Blues!"

And spending time with my beautiful friend, Teresa, from up north.

I live amongst down to earth, kind, caring folk ❤️

I think I really needed this 🥰

When you've got to get across a river of lava and you've only got ropes and carabiners and nobody knows how to use them you know you're in trouble!

This example from a team building day came to mind when I was thinking about why it's important to connect people to a purpose and to encourage everyone to contribute and make sure you're harnessing the wisdom in the team when you're creating a plan.

Facilitation is like an iceberg. The actual workshop or session is the tip. What you don't see is the careful planning, beginning with a deep exploration of the purpose, who will be there, and how to design to encourage collaboration and commitment.

I’m not sure anyone has ever left a three-hour PowerPoint presentation wishing there had been just a few more slides.

Recently, I was asked to facilitate business continuity planning workshops for small business owners.

The client gave me more than 40 technical slides, along with the freedom to completely reshape them. That was why they hired me: to make a potentially dry topic interactive, useful and practical.

I pulled out the essential information, translated it into plain English, and created a workbook and template participants could begin filling in during the session.

The remaining slides were quietly released back into the wild.

What could have been death by PowerPoint became a lively discussion. People uncovered risks they hadn’t considered and left with practical ideas for making their businesses more resilient.

What makes a workshop or training session feel genuinely worthwhile to you?

As a business owner, thinking about what happens if something goes wrong is a biggie!

It comes up in conversations with friends who are also self employed.

How does the business keep running if you're sick?

What happens if there is a flood and you can't get through?

Or the electricity is out for days?

Who picks things up, and how will they know what to do, or where to find important info?

Back in my DOC days I was heavily involved in leadership teams for emergency situations with fires, whale strandings, biosecurity issues and Covid.

And one thing I can tell you is having a plan is essential!

It means when the s$ hits the fan you aren't scrabbling around trying to figure stuff out.
