Biofeedback Art-Research Network

Biofeedback Art-Research Network an international community of artists, scientists, and researchers exploring the intersection of biological data and artistic expression.

The Biofeedback Art-Research-Practice Network, led by musicologist Anastasia Chernysheva and supported by Gray Area, is an international community of artists, scientists, and researchers exploring the intersection of biological data and artistic expression. Our goal is to integrate cutting-edge biofeedback technology in artistic practices to push the boundaries of conventional art-making and to ch

allenge traditional notions of the relationship between mind and body. The biofeedback art research practice network is an interdisciplinary community dedicated to advancing our understanding of the human experience and providing new insights into the potential of art as a tool for self-expression and self-discovery.

"My final dissertation at university was about the Fluxus art movement, and to my surprise, David [Mayor] had been an active Fluxus artist in the 1970s. Together, we combined inspirations and staged performances with performance artist Zoe Dowlen at the Contemporary Arts Centre in Bordeaux. These included It’s Not Alarm, It’s My Mother and Doing Nothing with Intensity (with Thibaut Cora), performing Yoko Ono’s Tunafish Sandwich, and simply playing brainwave feedback while playing chess."

"I would like my work to help foster a deeper awareness of the interconnectedness between humans and the natural world. By combining art and science, I hope to create experiences that spark curiosity, make scientific knowledge more accessible to the general public, and inspire care for often overlooked elements of our ecosystems."

It's a wrap! And a proof of concept:
with a bit of guidance, anyone can create a biofeedback music instrument in under 2 hours! All you need is a laptop, some free software like Max/MSP and Arduino, plus an Arduino kit to construct a GSR (galvanic skin response) sensor. The parts, including the Grove GSR and Grove Base Shield V2.0 for the Seeeduino V4.3, will run you about $20-30, and don’t forget a USB! If you're new to the software, the process may take a longer — especially since you'll need to design a sonification tool yourself.

Thanks everyone who joined Barbara Nerness and me this Saturday at Gray Area to discover how biofeedback may be an approach for making for art and music based on physiological processes that keep us alive.

Just like a synthesizer, our bodies rely on electricity and have their own rhythms—think about respiration, heartbeat, and brain activity. How does maintaining that rhythm relate to our well-being? May observing brainwave activity on the screen help you understand how you better understand yourself? Can we expand our sensorium wearing or implanting biosensors?
Does technology shape us, or do we shape technology? What can we learn from observing and listening to the "ecology" of our skin?

What other biofeedback + art practices are you curious about or want to learn more about? Share your thoughts!
