Year 3 Bachelor of Environment & Climate Change students from PNG University of Natural Resources and Environment, accompanied by their lecturer, Ms. Kaludia Kaumi recently visited Ialakua Village for a field excursion aligned with their module βSustainability & Development under a Changing Climate.β ππ
The visit was warmly welcomed by the ENB Sea Keepers and Malia Foundation team leaders alongside members of the Ialakua community.
Our visitors experienced a beautiful traditional customary welcome, where shell money was placed on their lecturer as a sign of respect and appreciation.
We also shared varlapang β the traditional sharing of betelnut - to welcome and connect with our guests in true community spirit.
The program began with a devotion led by the Ialakua Pastor, followed by uplifting songs from the male choir that created a meaningful and heartfelt atmosphere for everyone present. πΆπ
Students then rotated through four interactive learning stations, grouped by colors β βͺ White, β« Black, π΅ Blue, and π’ Green β with each station led by our youth leaders in Ialakua Village.
The stations focused on:
πΉ Coral Restoration & and climate monitoring
πΉ Marine Customary Closures & Indigenous Governance
πΉ Water Security & Climate Resilience
πΉ Beach Cleanup & Marine Pollution Audits
It was inspiring to witness future environmental leaders engaging directly with community-driven conservation efforts, indigenous knowledge systems, and climate adaptation initiatives.
Experiences like this strengthen the connection between academic learning and practical community resilience in coastal Papua New Guinea. π±π
A big thank you to Ms. Kaludia Kaumi, the ECC312 students, ENB Sea Keepers, Malia Foundation team leaders, youth leaders, church leaders, and the Ialakua community, for making the day a meaningful cultural and educational exchange.
