From Nov - Dec, 2021, Ecowoks was privileged to take part in baseline studies as part of Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) for Purari Hydro Project planned to be undertaken by Fortesque Future Industries (FFI). EERM provided consultancy services in Freshwater Aquatic Ecology Studies. It will continue to cover Estuarine Aquatic Ecology in February 2022.

***Environment Permitting Process***
In PNG, environment regulation is administered by CEPA, mostly through the Environment Act 2000. Under this act, all activities (industrial/projects) are categorized into Level 1, 2 or 3 depending on the impacts they have on environment. Level 3 activities are the ones that can potentially cause serious environmental harm. All large projects, mining/oil/gas and industrial activities fall under this category. For level 3 activities, proponents need to obtain an Environment Permit from CEPA in order to carry out their planned activities.
Key components of obtaining an EP for a Level 3 Activity is listed sequentially here;
1. Intention to Conduct Preparatory Works.
2. Environment inception report (EIR).
3. Environment impact statement (EIS).
4. Application for environment permit (EP).

Now ceased Misima Mine in Milne Bay is the first mine in PNG to use deep sea tiling placement (DSTP) to dispose mine tailings. It has discharged a life of mine (LOM) tailing quantity of 90mt into the 1500m deep Bwagaoia Basin via a 112m submarine pipeline. The primary reason for DSTP there, was lack of real estate (land) for any on-land storage options. Bathymetry of Bwagaoia basin is somewhat interlocked, trapping most of the tailing to spread out wide. Studies have shown that benthic organisms on the seafloor were affected but also recolonize seafloor smothered by tailing, although species composition was not at its best. Currently, there are 3 operational DSTP in the country, 2 are proposed to start soon and 1 have been suggested. It can been correctly said that PNG is home to DSTP.
Thus it is important that our local scientists and environment consultancy firms must participate in the development, operation and closure of DSTP in PNG.
