RPNGC Increases Recruit Intake

ROYAL PAPUA NEW GUINEA CONSTABULARY

MEDIA STATEMENT

Tuesday May 5th, 2026

The Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) has marked a historic milestone, announcing that for the first time, more than 700 recruits will undergo police training at the National Centre of Excellence (NCoE) in Bomana, National Capital District.

A total of 715 candidates were shortlisted for the second batch of 2025 recruits, drawn from the Highlands, New Guinea Islands, and the southern provinces of NCD, Central, and Gulf.
These recruits will undertake a six-month intensive training program at the NCoE.

Of the shortlisted candidates, 27 declined the offer, while 688 have confirmed their acceptance and are now in Bomana preparing for training. Among them are 85 women, reflecting the Constabulary’s ongoing commitment to gender equity in law enforcement.

In previous years, the RPNGC could only accommodate 250 to 300 recruits per intake. However, the expansion of training facilities at Bomana has enabled the Constabulary to meet the government’s directive to increase intake numbers. This second batch of 2025 recruits is a direct result of that capacity boost.

Breakdown of confirmed recruits by region:
Highlands Region: Eastern Highlands (31), Simbu (50), Jiwaka (22), Western Highlands (41), Enga (5), Southern Highlands (13)

New Guinea Islands Region: Manus (15), West New Britain (28), East New Britain (40), New Ireland (7), Autonomous Region of Bougainville (8)
Southern Region: NCD (315), Central (58), Gulf (19)

The RPNGC has also announced that the call for applications for the 2026 Regular Recruit and Police Cadet programs will be released later this month, offering more opportunities for aspiring officers to join the force.
(Ends).

18-Year-Old Prodigy from Enga Graduates with Highest Distinctions in Mining Engineering

by Michael Passingan

LAE, Papua New Guinea — An 18-year-old boy from a remote highland village has stunned the nation by completing a Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering at the Papua New Guinea University of Technology (Unitech) with the highest distinctions all before his first beard has even appeared.

Junior Pyakari, from Pumbul Village in Kandep District, Enga Province, was awarded his degree this week, capping off an academic journey that saw him skip multiple grades and rise from a small rural elementary school to one of the country’s top universities in record time.

Born and raised by his mother Lona in Lyumbi village, Kandep District, Pyakari began his education at Keso Elementary School. He finished Prep to Grade 2 before simply bypassing Grades 3 and 4 to enter Grade 5. He later skipped Grade 6 entirely, moving straight into Grade 7 at Keso Primary School.

His remarkable pace continued at Porgera Secondary School, where he started in Grade 9. After just one term, school authorities allowed him to jump to Grade 10 because of his outstanding results. He completed Grades 10 to 12 at Porgera and was named Overall Dux of the school, earning direct entry into the Mining Engineering programme at Unitech in Lae.

During every university holiday from his first year to his final year, Pyakari returned to the Porgera area, where Porgera Joint Venture (PJV) employed him on site, giving the teenage student hands-on industry experience while his classmates rested.

University officials described the achievement as “truly exceptional.”

Speaking after the graduation, Pyakari’s story has quickly spread across the highlands and beyond, with many calling him a once-in-a-generation talent.

“Em yet liklik boi tasol, maus grass ino grow yet na em kisim Degree pinis,” locals in Enga have been saying in Tok Pisin “He’s still just a little boy, his beard hasn’t even grown yet, and

🌟 To All the Grade 12s of Papua New Guinea – My Story Might Inspire You 🌟

Congratulations to all Grade 12s who have just graduated around PNG 🎓🇵🇬

Some of you will receive acceptance letters, but many will not—simply because spaces in tertiary institutions are limited. But let me encourage you through my own journey.

I was a top student in primary school. But when I reached secondary school, peer influence dragged my marks down. Yet deep in my heart, I always wanted to become an Engineer.

In Grade 12, my class teacher advised me to apply for colleges, but I insisted I only wanted PNG University of Technology. Because of that decision, I was withdrawn from Grade 12 just before the final exams in 2008.

In 2009, I humbled myself and got re-admitted to repeat Grade 12. I wrote the exams with full hope—but again, didn’t get selected for University.

In 2010, I went for Adult Matriculation at Mt Hagen Secondary School DODL Centre. I upgraded my marks, applied again and was shortlisted for an entry test at UNITECH—but still not selected.

However, I was accepted into Diploma in Electrical Engineering at Lae Polytech in 2011. I completed my diploma in 2012. My dream to study at UNITECH never died, so I applied again—and eventually got selected to do my Bachelor in Electrical Engineering. I finished my degree in 2015 and graduated in 2016.

Today, after 10 years working as an engineer, my passion for education still pushed me further. I was blessed with a scholarship to study my Master’s in Renewable Energy Technologies and Management at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Delhi 🇮🇳✨

I’m now doing my Masters and aiming to complete by 2027.

💡 What I want you to learn from this👇

🔹 Failing once doesn’t define your future
🔹 If your marks are low, upgrade them
🔹 If University rejects you, take another path
🔹 There are many routes to the same destination
🔹 Never stop dreaming
🔹 Never stop trying

Life is a journey. Sometimes you have to walk the hard road before you reach success. There us always light at the end of the tunnel!
