I have used MS Excel for a long time. The main thing I love is its flexibility. It can be used to create a simple table, perform multiple calculations or even report on the business’s financial position.
Throughout my professional career, I used MS Excel for most of the work I performed (accounting, taxation, and consulting) and have learned that through the practical usage of MS Excel, you can reduce the amount of time that it takes to complete standard tasks/ calculations. And though there are many useful paid add-ins that can make them better, it only requires an understanding of MS Excel, the data, and the ending result.
Through understanding these three areas, I have been able to help clients with their internal processes. The deliverable varies from a calculation template to a complex template that reports their financial position (Income Statement, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow). But they have all been created in MS Excel and are designed to be as simple to use as possible.
Some of the more complex templates have been reported to reduce the time taken from days to hours or even minutes. And while I love hearing comments like this, by far the best comment I can receive is that after several years, they are still using that template. This confirms that the time taken to understand the process, develop the template, and include additional features for useability and testing have allowed me to create something that brings value.
