PNG SME Awards Confirms SmartBiz Pacific Appointment to Deliver Outcome‑Based Prize Support

The PNG SME Awards has confirmed the appointment of SmartBiz Pacific, an emerging business advisory firm, to deliver the structured support component for award recipients. While the major prize from Ela Motors remains unchanged, this new framework — applicable to winners in 2025 and 2026 — is designed to channel sponsorship resources into measurable business growth impact areas.

Under the revised model, prizes can no longer be diverted to personal expenses such as haus krai costs, school fees, or consumer items. Instead, all nominated businesses will undergo a rigorous assessment that identifies critical gaps defining whether a business can truly scale. The evaluation zeroes in on five core leadership domains:

1) Sales & Marketing Management— testing whether strategies drive sustainable demand.

2) Human Resource Management — assessing talent attraction, retention, and empowerment.

3) Accounting & Taxation — ensuring compliance and financial clarity.

4) Financial Management — balancing risk, cash flow, and investment.

5) Scale Knowledge — determining operational readiness for expansion.

SmartBiz Pacific will commence with three critical pillars of enterprise growth: Accounting & Taxation, Financial Management — balancing risk, cash flow, and investment — and Scale Knowledge, which determines operational readiness for expansion.

This outcome‑based approach ensures sponsorship support is used to nurture small businesses and strengthen their capacity to grow responsibly.

As local entrepreneurs, SmartBiz brings proven success stories of scaling businesses — with Ultimax Security standing as a flagship achievement. Mr. Runawery formally welcomed SmartBiz founder Felix Gabriel and newly appointed Associate Partner Stotick Kaprangri into the fold.

The Awards also issued a caution: SMEs must uphold the highest standards of social media and public conduct, following one revoked award and another near miss.

At the Prime Minister’s SME Breakfast in June, Prime Minister James Marape reminded SMEs of the government’s allocation to all Members of Parliament for SME support within their districts.

Nominees from outside the National Capital District are required to secure travel support from their local MP and DDA Chairman, and District CEOs, as districts receive government funding for SME initiatives.

As Mr. Runawery reiterated:

“Ask your MP, Ask your DDA CEO, Ask your Governor, Ask your PA.”

SmartBiz Pacific was privileged to participate in SME Week at APEC Haus, joining a diverse group of predominantly SMEs from Alotau, as well as parts of Central and Gulf Provinces.

Our Managing Partner, Felix Gabriel, had the honour of joining Collin Kopyoto, Managing Director of Ultimax Security Services, on the panel to discuss the successes of SMEs, key compliance matters, the challenges facing the sector, and the opportunities that lie ahead for businesses in Papua New Guinea.

The discussion highlighted the importance of sound governance, regulatory compliance, and strategic business management in enabling SMEs to grow sustainably and contribute meaningfully to the nation's economy.

SmartBiz Pacific Principal, Felix Gabriel, CPA, MBA, was privileged to be a speaker at the Inaugural Pacific International Conference, held at APEC Haus on Wednesday, 26 November 2025.

The conference carried the theme “One Pacific, One Profession – Strengthening Internal Audit for Regional Impact” as we mark PNG’s 50th anniversary of Independence and dedicate our efforts to advancing the internal audit profession across the Pacific region.

In recognition of his expertise as Founder and Principal of SmartBiz Pacific Ltd in Papua New Guinea, Mr Gabriel delivered an individual presentation on his experience working with small and medium enterprises – auditing their books, strengthening their financial systems and providing professional advisory services to everyday Papua New Guinean business owners.

He also took part in a panel discussion, sharing the stage with Sir Mahesh Patel to discuss, from the perspective of PNG business founders, the current economic climate, as well as the challenges and opportunities facing everyday Papua New Guineans.
