🌱 Mangrove Nursery Workshop with the Barakau Bayside Community 🌱

Last Saturday (2nd May), EDMS spent the day with the Barakau Bayside community sharing what we've learned about building and running a mangrove nursery — from site selection and nursery beds, to watering, shading, and the hard lessons that have shaped our work at the Kohua Mangrove Research Nursery.

Mangroves — hagwa — protect our coastline, shelter our fisheries, and lock away carbon. When a community owns a nursery, it owns a tool to restore its own coast — and a source of income through seedling sales.

A huge thank you to everyone at Barakau Bayside who turned up, asked great questions, and got involved. This is the start of a partnership we're really looking forward to.

Mangroves are the roots of the sea — and Barakau Bayside has just become one of its caretakers.

Last month, Kohua Marine Sanctuary had the privilege of hosting the Advancing PNG: Women Leaders Network Inc. (APNG WLN) as part of their 5th Biennial General Meeting. Forty inspiring women from across the country joined us on site and helped plant 40 mangrove seedlings from our research nursery.

We were grateful for the opportunity to connect with these remarkable mamas, share our work, and highlight the power of youth‑led community conservation.

A heartfelt thank you to APNG WLN for spending time with us. We look forward to building more meaningful partnerships in the future.

🌊 Kohua Beach Tour — February Highlights

We had a meaningful and energising day at Kohua Beach, bringing together community members, students, and families for our February Kohua Beach Tour. The hill hike, beach games, and shared conversations reminded us why stewardship is not just an activity — it’s a practice of care, connection, and responsibility.

Our theme, “To Tend and To Keep,” guided the day. It was encouraging to see people of all ages engaging with the coastline, learning from the landscape, and contributing to a space that holds cultural and ecological value for our community.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us and supported this work. Your presence strengthens our commitment to protecting Kohua Beach and nurturing the next generation of ocean guardians.

Mangrove ecosystems play a critical role in protecting coastlines, supporting biodiversity, and strengthening climate resilience. 🍃

On Saturday, 21st March 2026, Eda Davara Marine Sanctuary will host another Mangrove Seedling Collection and Planting Activity at Barakau Village. This community initiative provides an opportunity for participants to learn about mangrove species, seedling identification, and restoration practices while contributing directly to the conservation of coastal ecosystems.

Participation fee: K50 per person
(Includes transport, 20 seedling bags, and bottled water)

As we begin the week, we look ahead to this Saturday’s Kohua Beach Tour — themed “To Tend and To Keep.”

This Valentine’s edition invites participants to reflect on stewardship as an expression of love in action — caring for our land, sea, and community.
