REGISTERING SME BUSINESS ACCOUNT IS NOT THE SAME AS YOUR PERSONAL BANK ACCOUNT.

This is where many ordinary Papua New Guineans get it wrong.

You register your business, walk into the bank and say:

โ€œMi laik opim business account.โ€

Then the bank gives you a checklist and says, โ€œBring these documents.โ€

You walk out confused.

What are these papers? Where do I get them? Why does the bank need them?

See,

FOR A SOLE TRADER, BANK'S CURRENT CHECKLIST INCLUDES:

โœ… Completed Business Account Application โ€” the bank gives you this form. Fill it in. If you don't understand something, ask the teller. Don't guess.

โœ… Cover Letter โ€” A simple formal letter requesting the bank to open your SME/business account.

โœ… Business Profile โ€” VERY IMPORTANT. This tells the bank who you are, what your business does, where it operates, what you sell or provide, who owns and manages it, and how the business is structured.

A proper profile can show your management structure, from owner/manager down to other staff positions where applicable.

โœ… IPA Certificate โ€” Proof that your business is registered with the Investment Promotion Authority (IPA).

โœ… Individual TIN โ€” Your Tax Identification Number through the Internal Revenue Commission (IRC).

โœ… Valid ID โ€” NID, Driver's Licence or Passport. Take your original ID for verification if the bank requests it.

๐Ÿ“„ WHAT ARE IPA CERTIFICATE AND CoGS?

Many new SMEs don't understand these.

IPA Business Certificate:
This is evidence of your business registration. It contains important registration details such as the business name, registration/certificate number and renewal/expiry information.

Certificate of Good Standing (CoGS):
This contains important business registration details, including the business name, IPA registration number, registration information, business activity and owner information.

๐Ÿ‘‰ KEEP YOUR BUSINESS DOCUMENTS SAFE.

Don't throw them into a bag and forget about them.

Keep your IPA and IRC documents safely, and keep copies where appropriate.

๐Ÿงพ AND WHAT ABOUT IRC?

IPA and IRC are not the same thing.

Think about it simply:

IPA = BUSINESS REGISTRATION

IRC = TAX REGISTRATION

Your TIN is important because your business has tax responsibilities.

Being registered as a business does not mean you can ignore your tax obligations.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ WHAT IF TWO PEOPLE OWN THE BUSINESS?

YES โ€” TWO PEOPLE CAN OWN AN SME BUSINESS.

But don't walk into the bank as if you are a one-owner business.

Where applicable, both owners need their own TIN and identification, and the bank may require meeting minutes showing that the owners agreed to open the business account.

Your meeting agenda can simply be:

โ€œOPENING OF SME BUSINESS BANK ACCOUNT.โ€

Record the decision properly and attach the minutes to your documents.

๐Ÿ“Ž WHAT DOES โ€œANNEXUREโ€ MEAN?

Don't be frightened by big English words.

ANNEXURE = SUPPORTING DOCUMENT ATTACHED TO YOUR MAIN DOCUMENT.

For example:

๐Ÿ“Ž IPA Business Certificate
๐Ÿ“Ž Certificate of Good Standing
๐Ÿ“Ž IRC TIN
๐Ÿ“Ž Identification copies
๐Ÿ“Ž Meeting Minutes, where applicable
๐Ÿ“Ž Other documents requested by the bank

Simple.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฌ HERE IS THE BIGGER PROBLEM...

Too many of our people have good business ideas but poor preparation.

We blame the bank.

We blame the teller.

We blame the paperwork.

But sometimes the problem is simple:

WE DON'T UNDERSTAND THE PROCESS.

Don't be ashamed to ask questions.

Don't guess.

Don't submit half-prepared documents and expect the bank to fix your business paperwork for you.

Learn. Prepare. Organise. Then walk into the bank.

Today was a great milestone as we officially opened the SME Business at Nuink Village along the Porgera Highway and the road linking Kandep District.

One important message I shared was that every successful SME starts small. Whether it is selling garden food, operating a roadside market, or running a small village trade store, hard work and consistency can help a business grow.

I also highlighted a major challenge faced by many SME owners in our communities. Whenever there is a social obligation, fundraising, or community issue, SME owners are often expected to contribute, even when their businesses are still struggling. This places unnecessary pressure on hardworking business people and slows business growth. Our communities need to recognise and respect the efforts of genuine SME owners.

At PNG AGRO SME INCORPORATION LTD, our role goes beyond business registration. We provide practical advice, mentoring, and one-on-one support to help SMEs grow from the grassroots level.

The pathway to self-reliance starts with creating income through small businesses, trade stores, agriculture, and other local enterprises. Start small, grow steadily, and build a better future for your family and community.

For business registration, SME advice, and consultation services, visit PNG Agro SME Incorporation Limited Office, Wabag.

: 381 ENTITIES REGISTERED โ€” AND OUR WORK DOESNโ€™T STOP AT REGISTRATION.

A BUSINESS UPDATE FROM PNG AGRO SME INCORPORATION LIMITED

We have never been the type of firm that posts every Certificate, IPA document, IRC TIN, business profile or registration document on Facebook just to prove how much work we have done.

Why?

Because our clients know what we do.

For the past three years, PNG Agro SME Incorporation Limited has quietly worked behind the scenes, helping individuals, entrepreneurs, community groups, associations and business owners turn their ideas into properly established entities.

So today, this is simply an update to let our clients, supporters and the wider business community know where we are and what we have been doing.

381 ENTITIES REGISTERED SO FAR

Over the past three years, we have assisted with the registration of 381 entities.

Our work has covered different types of organisations and businesses, including:

โ€ข Associations
โ€ข Business Groups
โ€ข Companies
โ€ข Businesses / Sole Traders
โ€ข Other community and entrepreneurial entities

But for us, registration is only the beginning.

WE DONโ€™T JUST REGISTER YOUR ENTITY AND WALK AWAY.

When we assist with registration, our support can go beyond the initial IPA registration.

Depending on the type and requirements of the entity, our assistance may include:

โœ… IPA registration and documentation
โœ… IRC TIN registration
โœ… Certificate of Compliance (CoC), where required
โœ… Business / Company Profile preparation
โœ… Profiles and supporting documents for different entities
โœ… Meeting Minutes
โœ… Cover Letters for bank account opening
โœ… Guidance on business account-opening requirements
โœ… General business documentation and preparation

Our objective is simple:

Help you move from an idea โ†’ to a registered entity โ†’ to an operating and growing business.

OUR RELATIONSHIP DOESNโ€™T END AFTER REGISTRATION.

One thing we value most is that we continue to work with many of the owners, directors, executives and members of the entities we have helped establish.

We understand that registering a business is one thing.

Knowing what to do next is another.

That is why we continue providing hands-on assistance where our clients need it, including support with:

๐Ÿ“Œ Business plans
๐Ÿ“Œ Accessing business finance and loans
๐Ÿ“Œ Strengthening existing businesses
๐Ÿ“Œ Developing new business ideas
๐Ÿ“Œ Expanding an existing business into new areas
๐Ÿ“Œ Business documentation
๐Ÿ“Œ Understanding business requirements
๐Ÿ“Œ Turning ideas into practical business opportunities

Sometimes a client comes to us with nothing more than an idea.

Our role is to help them understand:

What should I register?
What documents do I need?
What comes next?
How do I open an account?
How can I make this business stronger?
How can I expand?
How can I prepare myself to seek finance?

These are the questions that matter after registration.

WHY WE DONโ€™T POST EVERYTHING

In todayโ€™s social media environment, it is easy to think that a business is only active when you see certificates, photos and achievements posted online.

But business does not happen only on Facebook.

A lot of our work happens quietly โ€” sitting with clients, preparing documents, discussing ideas, correcting mistakes, making applications, developing business plans and helping people understand what they are doing.

We respect our clients and their businesses, so we do not feel the need to publicly display every document we prepare or every entity we register.

Our results are in the businesses and organisations we continue to support.

381 IS NOT JUST A NUMBER.

Behind every registered entity is a person.

Behind that person is often a family, an idea, a livelihood, employees, a community or a dream for something bigger.

That is what keeps us going.

We are not simply interested in increasing the number of registrations.

We want to see people understand business, establish properly, operate responsibly and grow.

TO OUR EXISTING CLIENTS

To the 381 entities we have assisted so far โ€” thank you for trusting PNG Agro SME Incorporation Limited.

Whether you are an owner, director, executive, entrepreneur, association member or business group leader, our relationship does not have to end with your registration.

Keep building. Keep asking questions. Keep improving. Keep looking for opportunities.

And where we can assist, we will continue walking alongside you.

TO THOSE PLANNING TO START

If you have a business idea but don't know where to begin, don't be discouraged.

You don't have to know everything before you start.

Sometimes, the first step is simply getting the right information and understanding the process.

PNG Agro SME Incorporation Limited is a people-centred PNG consultancy firm committed to helping people establish, understand and grow their businesses and organisations.

381 entities registered.
3 years of service.
And we are still building.

We don't just register entities.
We help people build what comes after registration.

โ“WHAT IS A SMALL & MEDIUM ENTERPRISE (SME)?
You hear people saying โ€œSMEโ€ everywhereโ€”but what does it actually mean?
In simple words, an SME is a small or medium-sized business that a person, family, partnership or group owns and operates to make income.
๐Ÿ‘‰ SME = Small and Medium Enterprise.
You don't need a big shop in Port Moresby to be an SME.
Even a small business in a village, rural area or local market can be an SME.

๐ŸŒฑ SIMPLE EXAMPLES OF SMEs
An SME can be:

๐Ÿฅฌ A farmer growing and selling vegetables
๐Ÿ– Someone raising pigs and selling them
๐Ÿ” A chicken-raising business
๐Ÿž A small bakery
๐Ÿ›’ A trade store
๐Ÿฒ A small takeaway or food business
๐Ÿš• A PMV or transport business
๐Ÿ”จ A carpenter or building business
๐Ÿงต A sewing/tailoring business
๐Ÿ“ฑ A phone-credit or mobile-money-related business
โ˜• A small coffee business
๐ŸŸ A fishing business
๐Ÿ’ป A small computer/printing business
๐Ÿ“ฆ A person buying and reselling products
If you are producing something, selling something, or providing a service to earn income, you may already be running a small business.

๐Ÿ’ก SME DOES NOT MEAN โ€œRICH BUSINESSโ€
This is important.

Many people think:

โ€œI am only selling at the market, so I am not a business owner.โ€

That is not necessarily true.

If you regularly sell your vegetables, kaukau, fruit, pigs, chickens, cooked food, bilum, clothes or other products to customers and receive money, you are doing business.

The business may be small todayโ€”but it can grow.
Liklik business tude, em inap kamap bikpela bisnis tumora. ๐ŸŒฑโžก๏ธ๐ŸŒณ

๐Ÿ’ฐ WHY ARE SMEs IMPORTANT?
SMEs help ordinary people create their own income instead of depending only on wages or government jobs.

A small business can help a family:
โœ… Pay school fees
โœ… Buy food
โœ… Pay transport costs
โœ… Build a house
โœ… Save money
โœ… Employ other people
โœ… Support the local community
โœ… Grow into a bigger business

For example:
One person starts selling vegetables.
Then the business grows.

โžก๏ธ They produce more vegetables.
โžก๏ธ They employ someone to help.
โžก๏ธ They supply a trade store or market.
โžก๏ธ They buy a vehicle.
โžก๏ธ They start supplying customers in another town.
That is how a small business can grow.

๐Ÿง  WHAT MAKES A BUSINESS SUCCESSFUL?
Having a business name alone does not make a business successful.

You need to learn how to:

๐Ÿ“Œ Know your customers
๐Ÿ“Œ Keep proper records
๐Ÿ“Œ Separate business money from personal money
๐Ÿ“Œ Calculate profit and loss
๐Ÿ“Œ Control your expenses
๐Ÿ“Œ Save and reinvest some profit
๐Ÿ“Œ Provide good-quality products or services
๐Ÿ“Œ Treat customers honestly
๐Ÿ“Œ Understand your tax and legal responsibilities
๐Ÿ“Œ Plan for the future

Bisnis em i no kisim moni tasol. Yu mas save long lukautim na growim moni.
---
๐ŸŒฑ START SMALL, BUT THINK BIG
You don't need K10 million to start a business.
Sometimes you can start with what you already have:
๐ŸŒฑ Land
๐Ÿ’ช Your labour
๐Ÿง  Your knowledge
๐Ÿ– Your livestock
๐Ÿฅฌ Your garden
๐Ÿ”จ Your skills
๐Ÿ“ฑ Your phone
๐Ÿค Your relationships and customers
Your biggest business asset may not be moneyโ€”it may be your skill, idea, land, product or ability to solve a problem.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฌ A MESSAGE TO OUR RURAL PEOPLE
If you are a farmer in Enga or elsewhere in PNG, a market seller in in rural PNG, a carpenter in the village, a mother selling food, a young person providing a service, or someone raising pigs and chickens for saleโ€”
Don't automatically think that business is only for people in the cities.

Business starts wherever people have needs and someone provides a useful product or service.
Village tu i no stopim yu long kamap entrepreneur.
Start with what you have.
Learn.

Keep records.
Serve people well.
Reinvest.
Grow slowly.

๐Ÿ‘‰ SHARE THIS

Someone in your village may already be running a small business but doesn't realise the potential of what they are doing.
Let's help our grassroots people understand businessโ€”not just hear the word โ€œSME.โ€

๐Ÿ’ฐ 5 PLACES WHERE MONEY IS HIDDEN โ€” AND YOU MAY BE WALKING PAST THEM EVERY DAY

We often think money is something we must find, borrow, inherit, or wait for someone to give us. But sometimes, money is already hidden in plain sightโ€”not as cash, but as value waiting for someone to recognize it, develop it and serve others with it.

Whether you are an entrepreneur, student, employee, farmer, sole trader, village resident, professional, or someone simply trying to improve your life, learn to look at the world differently.

Here are 5 places where opportunity can be hiding:

1๏ธโƒฃ PEOPLE โ€” YOUR NETWORK CAN HAVE VALUE

People are not just contacts on your phone or people you meet every day.

They carry knowledge, experience, connections, resources, opportunities and different abilities.

A farmer may know how to produce food.
A carpenter knows how to build.
A teacher knows how to educate.
A mechanic knows how to repair.
A student may understand technology.
An experienced elder may know things that books cannot teach.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Learn to connect people with people, knowledge with needs, and opportunities with those who can use them.

Your network can become an opportunity when you learn how to create value through relationships.

2๏ธโƒฃ SKILLS & TALENTS โ€” WHAT CAN YOU DO?

One of the most overlooked forms of wealth is ability.

You don't necessarily need a big office, expensive equipment or a large amount of money to begin.

Ask yourself:

What can I do well?

Can you cook?
Build?
Repair?
Write?
Design?
Teach?
Farm?
Drive?
Sew?
Take photographs?
Use technology?
Speak well?
Organize people?

A skill becomes economically valuable when it solves a real need for someone else.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Don't only ask, โ€œWhat job can I get?โ€

Also ask:

โ€œWhat problem can my ability solve?โ€

3๏ธโƒฃ PROBLEMS โ€” EVERY PROBLEM CAN REVEAL A NEED

This is one of the most important lessons for anyone interested in business.

Instead of constantly asking:

โ€œWhere is the money?โ€

Start asking:

โ€œWhat problem are people experiencing?โ€

Look around your community.

What do people struggle to access?
What takes too much time?
What is too expensive?
What is difficult to obtain?
What service is missing?
What could be done faster, safer or better?

Entrepreneurs don't simply chase money.

They identify needs and create solutions.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The bigger or more persistent the problem, the more important it is to understand the need before trying to build a business around it.

4๏ธโƒฃ PRODUCTS & SERVICES โ€” TURN VALUE INTO SOMETHING PEOPLE CAN USE

An idea alone doesn't create much value until it becomes useful.

A product could be:

๐ŸŒฑ Agricultural produce
๐Ÿž Food
๐Ÿช‘ Furniture
๐Ÿ‘• Clothing
๐Ÿ“ฑ Digital products
๐Ÿ”ง Tools
๐Ÿ  Construction materials

A service could be:

๐Ÿš— Transport
๐Ÿ’ป Computer services
๐Ÿ“š Tutoring
๐Ÿ”ง Repairs
๐Ÿ“ธ Photography
โœ‚๏ธ Hairdressing
๐Ÿšœ Farming services
๐Ÿ“ฆ Delivery

The key question is:

โ€œWhat can I provide that genuinely helps someone?โ€

Don't just sell something because you want to make money.

Create or provide something people actually need.

5๏ธโƒฃ IDEAS โ€” BUT DON'T STOP AT THE IDEA

Ideas are everywhere.

Someone sees a problem and thinks:

โ€œThere must be a better way.โ€

That thought could become a business, a community project, a new service or a useful invention.

But remember:

An idea has little value if it remains only an idea.

Take the idea and:

Think โ†’ Test โ†’ Improve โ†’ Build โ†’ Serve โ†’ Learn

You don't always need to start big.

Start with what you have.

Start where you are.

Start by testing whether people actually need what you want to offer.

๐ŸŒฑ THE BIG LESSON

Money is not always hiding in a bank account.

Sometimes it is hiding in:

PEOPLE.
SKILLS.
PROBLEMS.
PRODUCTS & SERVICES.
IDEAS.

The difference is that money doesn't automatically appear just because these things exist.

You create economic value when you recognize an opportunity, solve a genuine problem, provide something useful, and deliver it consistently.

A young student can start learning a skill.

A villager can identify an unmet need in the community.

A farmer can improve how a product reaches the market.

A worker can turn a skill into a side business.

An entrepreneur can discover a problem nobody has properly solved.

You don't have to wait until you are rich to start thinking this way.

START LOOKING AT WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE.

Ask yourself tonight:

What people do I know?
What skills do I have?
What problems do I see?
What can I produce or provide?
What ideas have I been ignoring?

Because sometimes the opportunity you've been searching for isn't somewhere far away.

YOU MAY ALREADY BE SITTING NEXT TO IT.

LOOK CLOSER. ๐Ÿ‘€
LEARN. ๐Ÿง
SOLVE. ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ
CREATE. ๐Ÿ’ก
SERVE. ๐Ÿค
GROW. ๐ŸŒฑ

11/08/2026

Starting a cabbage or patchoi business here in Enga or anywhere in Papua New Guinea is something ordinary people like us can really do. You donโ€™t need big money or fancy equipment. The main thing you bring is yourself โ€” your hands, your time, and the care you put into looking after the plants every day. A lot of families begin with just around three hundred kina. That gets you about forty seedlings at roughly one kina each and at least two hundred seventy kina for fertiliser. The piece of land is already there in your garden or family plot. Thatโ€™s all you need to get going.

You clear a small area, dig the soil, make simple raised beds so the water drains well, and mix in some fertiliser plus any compost or manure you have. Then you plant the seedlings, preferably when itโ€™s cooler, water them properly, and keep an eye on them. Water regularly, pull the weeds, and watch out for those insects that love eating the leaves. If you look after them well, the plants grow stronger. In our highland weather they are usually ready in about two to three months.

Not every seedling will make it, of course. From forty plants you can realistically expect around twenty-five good ones to reach full size if you care for them. In the local markets around Wabag and nearby places, a firm good-sized cabbage head often sells for five to ten kina. When thereโ€™s not much supply or the quality is really good, people get eight to twelve kina. By weight itโ€™s commonly around three to six kina a kilogram. Patchoi sells by the bunch for a bit less but still moves. Clean heads sold early in the morning bring better money. So with twenty-five heads averaging eight to ten kina you can bring home around two hundred to two hundred fifty kina from that first harvest.

Most of the fertiliser will still be left, so you use it for the next planting. Take some of the money to buy more seedlings and put the rest aside. Donโ€™t spend it all. Just plant again, a bit bigger if you can. Every time you learn more about the soil, the weather, the pests, and what people in the market want. That small plot slowly becomes a steady source of cash for the family.

This is how many of us in the highlands start. Keep it simple, look after the plants every day, sell what you harvest in the local market, save a bit, and grow from there. Itโ€™s practical work that fits the land and the life we already know. Share this with your family and neighbours so more people in Enga and across Papua New Guinea can try it and see the results for themselves.
