A New Chapter for Oksapmin From Isolation to Access

For many families in Huti Ward, West Oksapmin, healthcare has never been around the corner. Accessing basic medical services often means travelling long distances through difficult terrain, leaving many vulnerable to preventable illnesses and delayed treatment.

Today, that story is beginning to change after West Sepik Inclusive Development Foundation Inc. (WSIDF) received a K50,000 grant from Digicel PNG Foundation under its Community Grants program to build a community aid post.

The proposed Huti Community Aid Post Project, aims to bring essential healthcare services closer to more than 500 people living in one of Sandaun Province's most remote communities. The aid post will provide primary healthcare, maternal and child health services, basic medicines, and health awareness programs, creating a lasting impact for generations to come.

Founder and Chairperson, Noel Steven shared: "Development is most meaningful when it reaches those who have been left behind for too long. We believe every person, regardless of how remote their community may be, deserves access to quality healthcare. This project will bring essential services closer to the people and empowering communities to build a healthier future."

This initiative reflects the power of community partnership, local leadership, and a shared commitment to ensuring no one is left behind. With support from stakeholders and the community itself, Huti Ward is taking a significant step towards a healthier and more resilient future.

The projects, which include the Papua LNG, P’nyang and Pasca A LNG projects and the Wafi-Golpu copper and gold project, are expected to drive out-sized economic growth in the medium term. Based on past energy and resources investment cycle data presented to the Conference, annual economic growth could peak in 8-12% range, creating significant opportunities for business and investors throughout the PNG economy.

Daniel was more cautious about the short-term with PNG’s current steady economic growth likely to soften as a result of the current El Niño, which is already impacting coffee and other agricultural output, and production at some major mining projects.

Longer-term, geopolitical competition is creating a need for diversification and reliable energy and resources partners, and which is supporting the strong resources pipeline, and setting PNG up for our next super cycle of economic growth.

Multiple income streams can also give you more options when life or the economy changes. Over time, well-built passive income can help your money work for you while allowing you to focus on your family, career, health, and personal goals.

We need to start building our YOUTH into all of these areas.

Forensic accounting, fraud examination, data analytics, inter-entity transactions, company and trust structures, digital evidence and preparing financial evidence for court.

Get our qualified young people into supervised rotations through IRC, IPA, Customs, Police, the Auditor-General and our resource regulators. Let their practical work count towards recognised qualifications.

And these agencies must report properly—with enough detail that there is no doubt about what was investigated, what was confirmed and how much money was actually recovered.

Those who follow the money must also be followed.

If an agency uncovers fraud, hidden transactions, tax evasion or mismanaged public money, give that agency additional funding—but ONLY from money that has been confirmed and recovered, not from allegations. Use that funding to employ and train more qualified PNG youth.

Start teaching some of this in HIGH SCHOOL.

Teach our children downstream processing based on the produce and resources available in their own communities. Teach them how to prepare feasibility studies, market assessments, project proposals and budgets.

Our children should know how to turn what grows on their land into valued goods. That knowledge is better than gold.

Fund pilot programs around the country and let us see what our young people can do.

But most importantly, teach PRODUCTIVITY and PERSEVERANCE.

If one method does not work, improve the process. If one person or partnership does not work out, find another. Do not give up on the whole idea because one part failed.

Learn. Adapt. Grow. Keep going.

At the same time, government must make every kina traceable, restructure expensive borrowing, improve tax collection before increasing tax rates, stop hidden liabilities, apply a commercial test to major projects, control non-productive expenditure, ring-fence resource revenue and increase the public return from our resource projects.

There is SO MUCH MORE TO DO.

But our greatest resource is our people. Give our youth the training, qualifications, experience and opportunity to help build—and protect—the future of Papua New Guinea.
