"K30,000 to K50,000 for a Degree": Sir Robin Fleming Highlights Family Sacrifices at UPNG Graduation
At the University of Papua New Guineaโs 71st Graduation Ceremony (Day 4 โ 30 April 2026), former BSP Financial Group CEO and UPNG Council Member Sir Robin Fleming delivered a powerful and honest speech about the real cost of higher education in PNG.
He revealed that while a university degree costs between K30,000 to K50,000, the average salary in the formal sector is only around K25,000. Many parents and relatives take out bank loans โ even those living in the subsistence economy โ to give their children the opportunity to graduate.
Sir Robin praised the immense sacrifices made by families and urged the 596 graduates from the School of Business and Public Policy to honour those sacrifices as they step into leadership roles. He also spoke on the future of work with AI, the importance of meritocracy, integrity, and equal opportunities for women.
A deeply moving and timely message for every PNG family and graduate.
