On the eve of Christmas, the National Airports Corporation (NAC) and Internal Security Minister and Regional Member for the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB), Hon Peter Tsiamalili Jr, this morning signed an MOU in Port Moresby, to refurbish the existing Buka Airport passenger terminal at the cost of K2 million.
NAC Chairman, Jacob Anga said the refurbishment is the first phase of other important developments that are planned for Buka Airport.
Anga said, this was NAC’s commitment to developing Buka Airport in line with the development plans of the Marape-Rosso Government to support the rich agriculture, fisheries and tourism potential of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB).
Anga also said that work on the Aropa Airport Upgrade Project under CADIP 2, is progressing well, with completion expected in 2026.
Tsiamalili in thanking the national government, NAC and all important stakeholders said the refurbishment of the existing terminal at Buka Airport is a timely intervention and is important for the people of AROB.
“We are a special region, given the history of our island of Bougainville, we have two ports, Kieta port and Buka port and we have two airports, which is Aropa Airport and Buka airport and so it may take a bit of resource to have the airports prepared for us to fulfill the intent by our Prime Minister and the Government to Bougainville, that we need to be economically independent. This (airport) is one of our biggest enabler.” He said.
The occasion was witnessed by the Director of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority of PNG, Benedict Oraka, NAC Deputy Chairman, Marlen Brunskill and Director Andrew Abel.
