Every assay batch gets standards, blanks and duplicates. What checks the survey that puts those assays in place?

Downhole survey data decides where each sample interval sits in three dimensions. If that data is missing, sparse or wrong, a correctly assayed interval ends up plotted in the wrong place. The error then carries into the intercept depth, the interpreted geometry and the continuity between holes.
The assay is right. The location is not.

Survey tools have their own limitations. Magnetic instruments can return unreliable azimuths in magnetic ground or near casing, so a survey can look complete and still place a hole where it never went.

Assay QA/QC protects the grade. Survey validation protects where that grade sits.

At Global Geologica, we review downhole survey data as part of database validation, before modelling starts. That means checking survey coverage down each hole, testing readings against the tool type and local geology, and flagging any stations that need to be resolved before they reach the model.

Geophysical data is most useful when considered alongside drilling, geology, and other project information. As an exploration project progresses, the questions may change, but existing datasets can still contribute to geological understanding, particularly when different processing approaches are applied.

A dataset can be internally correct and still land in the wrong place.

Historical drilling supplied in one datum. A geophysical grid delivered in another. Tenement boundaries in a third. Each file is correct in its original form. Combined without reconciliation, features that should sit on top of each other are separated by tens or hundreds of metres.

The failure can be quiet. The map may still render without an obvious warning, while the offset goes unnoticed. What changes is where things appear to be: a target shifted away from the structure that generated it, a hole plotted outside the ground it was drilled on, or an anomaly that no longer sits where the geology puts it.

Coordinate reference system and projection handling is not simply a file conversion step. It is the foundation every spatial interpretation is built on, and it has to be resolved before datasets are used together, not after someone notices the offset.

Exploration program failures are rarely caused by a single factor. They can result from a combination of geological, technical, financial and organisational factors. One of these is how effectively the program is designed to test the geological interpretation behind the target.

A geological interpretation is not simply right or wrong. It reflects the evidence available at the time and develops as new information becomes available. Drilling can support some aspects of that interpretation, challenge others, and help refine the geological understanding.

This is why each drill hole should have a purpose. It should test a geological idea, reduce uncertainty, and contribute information that helps guide the next phase of work.

Positive results can strengthen confidence in an interpretation. Negative results can be equally useful when they narrow the possibilities and improve understanding of the geology.

A disciplined exploration program is therefore not only about whether a discovery or technical success is achieved. It is also about how effectively each stage of work improves geological understanding, reduces uncertainty, and supports better decisions.

There is a distinction in exploration geology that does not get discussed enough. Geological modelling and geological interpretation are not the same thing.

A geological model is a digital or physical representation of subsurface geology. A geological interpretation is the reasoning, judgement, and scientific thinking that the model is built upon. A model can be technically sophisticated and visually impressive while being built on a poorly reasoned interpretation. The reverse is also true. A rigorous interpretation can be poorly expressed in the model that represents it.

The distinction matters because the model is what most people see. Investors, boards, and regulators look at the model. They assess its apparent confidence and complexity. But the actual value of a geological model ultimately depends on the quality of the interpretation underneath it.

When reviewing a geological model, the most important questions are not about the software used or the visual complexity of the output. They are about the reasoning: What evidence supports this interpretation? What alternative interpretations were considered? Where is the model well constrained and where is it speculative?

Resource estimates ultimately depend on the quality of the assay data behind them. Drill hole intervals are sampled, sent to a laboratory, and the results come back as numbers that drive geological interpretation, resource estimation, and capital decisions. But how confident are you in those numbers?

QAQC stands for Quality Assurance and Quality Control. As part of the exploration sampling program, a QAQC program uses controls such as certified reference materials, blanks, and field duplicates to monitor analytical accuracy, contamination, and sampling repeatability.

Without a QAQC program, it is difficult to demonstrate whether your assay results are accurate, whether the laboratory is performing consistently, or whether your sample preparation is introducing contamination or bias. You simply have numbers without confidence.

A well-designed QAQC program does not add significant cost to an exploration program. It adds confidence to the data it produces, and confidence that holds up under scrutiny.

The best time to design a QAQC program is before the first sample is collected, not after a problem is discovered.
