What can we learn from yesterday's ABS-CBN News and ANC 24/7 Youtube channel hacking incident?

ABS-CBN News and ANC 24/7’s Youtube channels are back online after about 9 hours of being terminated by YouTube due to a “hacking incident”.

ABS-CBN confirmed that the downtime was indeed due to a cyberattack. Many security researchers observed the similarities of this attack to the recent hacking incidents of several high profile Youtube accounts.

With the other hacked Youtube accounts, hackers used Malicious Software (Malware) to compromise and install a Remote Access Trojan (RAT) on a trusted computer on the target's network. The hackers then used the compromised computer to login to the target's Youtube account, change the password, modify security settings and eventually take full control of the account.

The malware was most likely delivered through Email Phishing which is a type of social engineering attack.

This goes to show that even big companies with full complement of IT and InfoSec teams can still fall for this type of attacks.

This is why continuous security awareness training (for ALL employees) is very important. After all, Information Security is not only your IT department’s business, its EVERYBODYS business.
