Should Contractors Focus on Marketing or Service?

After almost a decade in the construction industry, I've realized something that many contractors overlook.

Everyone wants more leads.
Everyone wants better marketing.
Everyone wants to go viral on social media.

But here's what I've learned:

Marketing gets you your first project.
Service gets you the next ten.

At Alchedy Construction, we don't believe that growth comes from spending the most on advertisements. We believe growth comes from delivering projects professionally, communicating honestly, solving problems quickly, and earning our clients' trust.

Most of our opportunities today came from referrals and repeat clients—not because we had the best marketing, but because we focused on providing excellent service.

Good service creates:
✔ Client trust
✔ Repeat business
✔ Referrals
✔ Positive reputation
✔ Long-term growth

Marketing can bring people to your door.

Service is what makes them stay—and recommend you to others.

If you're a contractor trying to grow your business, don't just ask:
"How can I get more clients?"

Ask yourself:
"How can I serve my existing clients so well that they become my best marketers?"

That mindset has made a significant difference in our journey.

Marketing attracts attention.
Service builds a legacy.

DAY 3: PROJECT MANAGEMENT & CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULING

Winning a project is exciting.

But delivering it on time, within budget, and with a satisfied client?

That's where the real challenge begins.

Many contractors lose money not because they lack work, but because they lack systems.

Projects get delayed.
Materials arrive late.
Workers become idle.
Costs increase.
Clients become frustrated.
Profit disappears.

The truth is, a successful construction project doesn't happen by accident.

It is planned.

It is managed.

It is controlled.

In Day 3 of our Mastering Residential Construction program, I will share the actual project management systems we use to manage residential construction projects—from project kickoff to turnover.

Topics include:

✅ Construction Scheduling

✅ Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)

✅ Procurement Planning

✅ Material Forecasting

✅ Resource Allocation

✅ Progress Monitoring

✅ Managing Delays and Site Issues

✅ Daily Site Management

✅ Managing Multiple Projects Simultaneously

✅ Real Project Case Studies

I will also share some of the biggest project management mistakes I've encountered throughout my construction career and how we overcame them.

Because the reality is:

A project can have a perfect estimate and a signed contract.

But without proper planning and management, it can still lose money.

Participants will learn how to create practical schedules, monitor project progress, anticipate problems before they happen, and maintain control throughout the construction process.

This session is ideal for:

👷 Site Engineers

🏗️ Contractors

🏛️ Architects

📋 Project Managers

📈 Construction Business Owners

If you want to consistently deliver projects on time, within budget, and with confidence, this session is for you.

"I Want to Start My Own Construction Business. But Where Do I Start?"

This is probably one of the most common questions I receive from engineers, architects, and aspiring contractors.

Many people dream of starting their own construction company.

But then reality sets in.

❓ How much capital do I need?
❓ Should I register a sole proprietorship or corporation?
❓ How do I find my first client?
❓ How do I prepare a quotation?
❓ How do I compete against established contractors?
❓ What if I make a mistake?
❓ What if I fail?

The truth is, every successful contractor started exactly where you are today.

Without experience.
Without a large office.
Without a large team.

Just a vision, a willingness to learn, and the courage to take the first step.

When I started my construction journey, I made mistakes.

I underpriced projects.
I accepted jobs that I shouldn't have.
I encountered difficult clients.
I experienced delays, losses, and challenges.

But each mistake became a lesson.

And those lessons helped build the systems we use in our company today.

In Day 2 of our Mastering Residential Construction program, I will share the practical roadmap for aspiring contractors and construction entrepreneurs.

We'll discuss:

✅ How to start your construction business properly

✅ How to win your first projects

✅ How to prepare professional proposals

✅ How to price your services profitably

✅ How to avoid common startup mistakes

✅ How to manage risk and protect your business

✅ Real experiences from actual projects and actual clients

Most importantly, I will share not only what worked, but also the mistakes I made so you can avoid making the same costly errors.

Because success leaves clues.

And sometimes, learning from someone else's mistakes is much cheaper than learning from your own.

One of the best pieces of advice I received early in my career was this:

If you want to learn something, learn it from someone who has already done it.

Don't get me wrong.

Textbooks are important.
Courses are important.
Academic knowledge is important.

They provide the foundation.

But when it comes to construction, there are lessons that can only be learned through actual projects, actual mistakes, actual clients, actual delays, and actual challenges on the job site.

A textbook can teach you how to estimate.

An experienced contractor can teach you what happens when you miss an item in your estimate and how much it can cost you.

A textbook can teach you project management.

An experienced builder can teach you how to handle a delayed supplier, a difficult client, unexpected site conditions, and a project that is starting to lose money.

The reality is that construction is not only about engineering and architecture.

It's about decision-making, problem-solving, leadership, communication, risk management, and learning how to adapt when things don't go according to plan.

Most of the valuable lessons I've learned did not come from a classroom.

They came from projects that succeeded.

And more importantly, from projects that didn't go as planned.

That's one of the reasons I decided to create the Mastering Residential Construction program.

Not to teach theory alone, but to share the actual systems, lessons, mistakes, and experiences that helped me build and grow a construction company.

Because sometimes, a single lesson learned from someone's experience can save you years of trial and error.

Learn from books.

Learn from mentors.

But whenever possible, learn from people who have already walked the path you're planning to take.

That shortcut is called experience.

🏗️ DAY 1: ESTIMATING & BOQ FOUNDATIONS

Most residential construction projects do not fail because of poor workmanship.

They fail before construction even begins.

The biggest reason?

❌ Incorrect estimates.
❌ Missing scope of work.
❌ Incomplete BOQs.
❌ Underpriced bids.
❌ Unforeseen costs.

As a contractor, I've learned this lesson the hard way.

Over the years, I've experienced projects where I underestimated costs, missed items during take-off, and faced unexpected challenges that affected profitability. Some of those mistakes were expensive, but they taught me lessons that no textbook or classroom could ever teach.

In Day 1 of our Mastering Residential Construction program, I will share actual residential projects that we have completed, including real estimates, real BOQs, real project costs, and the lessons we learned along the way.

More importantly, I will also share some of my failures.

Because success stories are inspiring, but failures are where the real learning happens.

During this session, you will learn:

✅ How to properly read plans before estimating
✅ How to perform quantity take-offs accurately
✅ How to prepare a complete BOQ
✅ Common estimating mistakes that cost contractors money
✅ How to identify hidden costs before they become problems
✅ How to price projects profitably and competitively
✅ Real project case studies from actual completed projects

This is not theory.

This is based on actual projects, actual numbers, actual mistakes, and actual lessons learned from running a construction company.

If you are serious about residential construction, proper estimating is one of the most valuable skills you can develop. A single mistake in estimating can cost hundreds of thousands of pesos. A good estimate can make the difference between a profitable project and a losing one.

Over the past few years, I've had the opportunity to conduct seminars and share my experiences in the construction industry. Recently, many of my previous seminar attendees have been sending me messages asking if I could conduct a more in-depth training focused on residential construction.

After much consideration, I've decided to open a special training program this August.

For the first time, I will be sharing the actual systems, processes, and lessons that helped me build and grow my own construction company—from estimating and winning projects to managing construction sites and delivering projects profitably.

This is not a textbook-based seminar. This is a practical, real-world training based on actual projects, actual challenges, and actual solutions that we use in our company every day.
