Henry Sy didn't ask 'what's the most profitable business?'

He just observed his surroundings and realize people needed affordable shoes in post-war Manila.

He had access to surplus boots from American GIs.

He found a need and simply provided it by connecting the dots.

Nothing fancy, techy, or even glamorous at that time. Yet this pairing eventually led to the creation of Shoe Mart which then became SM with 80+ most and some of the biggest in the entire world!

"Sir, what's a good business if I have P500,000"?

This is one of the most common questions I get asked and I just want to point out that this is rather incomplete if not outright wrong.

Why?

Business is as broad as your imagination!

Even retailing (buying and selling) can vary so much you probably can't enumerate all possible iterations of it especially since this is so dynamic.

Instead of asking this vague question, I recommend you ask this instead...

"I have a background in medicine and I've always been interested in retailing, what do you think is a good business to open if I had P500,000".

In fact, when you do come up with this question, I'm sure you'll come to realize the possible niches that should best fit your background.

Taking this further, just as what I have been teaching in the OnlineRocket's Win-Win Entrepreneurship Course, I highly recommend that you start doing a SWOT analysis.

If you put your heart into your SWOT, I can guarantee that you'll be able to answer this all important and far too common question.
