PHILIPPINES DEFENSE AGAINST COASTAL AND AIR THREATS 🇵🇭🇮🇱🇷🇺🇮🇳
*RAFAEL SPYDER AIR DEFENCE MISSILE SYSTEM
•The surface-to-air Python 5 and Derby air defence missile system (SPYDER) is a low-level quick-reaction surface-to-air missile system developed by Rafael Armament Development Authority, and the MBT Missile Division and Elta Radar Division of Israel Aircraft Industries.
•SPYDER is capable of engaging aircraft, helicopters, unmanned air vehicles, and precision-guided munitions. It provides air defence for fixed assets and for point and area defence for mobile forces in combat areas. The SPYDER launcher is designed to fire Python 5 and Derby surface-to-air missiles.
-The PAF has earlier selected Rafael SPYDER for its ground-based air defense system acquisition project. The Philippine government is spending around P6 billion for three batteries, including radar, command and control unit, Python 5 and I-Derby missiles.
Both the Python 5 and I-Derby missiles could be used for surface launch and air-to-air, which means it could be integrated to the PAF’s FA-50 light combat aircraft.
Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd., the Israeli state-owned manufacturer, said the system was designed to address “a wide spectrum of threats such as attack aircraft, helicopters, bombers, cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and stand-off weapons.”

*BRAHMOS COASTAL DEFENSE SYSTEM WITH SUPERSONIC MISSILES
BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile being developed by BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture between Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of India and NPO Mashinostroeyenia (NPOM) of Russia. The missile can be launched against ships and land-based targets. The missile is named after two rivers, the Brahmaputra in India and the Moskva in Russia.
BrahMos has a flight range of up to 290km and can reach a maximum speed of Mach 3.
On March 2, 2021, the Philippines and India signed a government-to-government agreement on defense equipment procurement, paving the way for the sale of the Brahmos missile to the Philippines.
The main content of the agreement is the intention of the Philippines to acquire the BrahMos coastal defense system with supersonic missiles produced by the Russian-Indian joint venture BrahMos Aerospace. However, the agreement itself is not a contract. The Philippine Navy is said to purchase one batteries of the BrahMos system.
